Post Info TOPIC: merit raise money

merit raise money

I heard a conversation out tonight (at my table actually) that there was a movement by the faculty in business to give all of their merit raise money to the staff in the college.  Has anyone else heard about this?  I think it sounds wonderful myself.

This would sure make the faculty look good in the community, if it does indeed happen!  People in Hattiesburg might then realize that faculty actually ARE interested in more than money (as we all know on this board know that they are) -- that the well-being of the broader university community really DOES matter to them deeply.

I think members of the broader community might be surprised to learn how often faculty do in fact do these kinds of things -- such as buying books for needy students, helping them with tuition, donating money for schoalrships, etc.  This has happened on numerous occasions where I teach, and it is usually done very quietly, with no public notice.  However, if the USM faculty do decide that they want to help the staff in this way, someone should make sure that the HA hears about it.  Maybe the faculty could shame the upper administrators into following suit.

I think something similar happened with the previous merit raise money in at least one instance. Not everyone who received one of those raises felt good about getting the money, about how getting it was decided, and about how getting it would be perceived in the University community. I can't say much more, but I do know not all recipients kept the money and used for themselves.

I can verify for all that the story about a "movement" in the CBED to give all merit raise money to the staff is indeed true. I can also verify that the plan to do so was also turned down by Dean Doty.

One little passive aggressive man, no matter how many names he posts under, and how board-legitimate some of those names are does not a "movement" make. The entertainment factor deteriorates when his personal agenda becomes so transparent.

Sorry his salary is not as high as a colleague in the same department who is widely respected in the college, the university, the community, the state, and the field. Sorry there are decade-old
grudges being played out with a new scapegoat.
Sorry his friend left. Sorry he has chosen not to be a positive influence. He has a great deal of wit, scholarship, and potential - unfortunately, he's giving it to the "dark side".

When someone joins forces with crazy, low-life, and corrupt in order to make a coalition, it is very sad indeed.

Are you prepared to send me a private e-mail to discuss these issues? If not, I must respond in kind here. Will wait a few minutes.

What in blazes are you folks talking about? This exchange is much too cryptic for we out-of-towners. Please translate.

I think this is some personal issue between faculty members in the CBED. Just my hunch.

I will respond to your [bracketed] comment while I wait. First, giving the merit raise money to staff is something that's been discussed by many in the CBED in the past several days. Second, I think I know where you get some of your information. There is a colleague in my (our?) department that goes around speculating that I am everyone on the board. Most who know me know my screen name (above). It's interesting that I have a "personal agenda.." That's laughable.

Our colleague also tells everyone that I am jealous that my salary is below that of the "widely respected" person of whom you speak. As you and I both know, that colleague I refer to is known to dislike the "widely respected" individual with a passion (the litigious kind of passion; get my drift?), so he was speaking for himself and not for me when he made those recent statements to you about salary.

Please e-mail me.

Tomcat my board colleague,

I am both shocked and disappointed in the revelation from you.  You've been a valued poster on this website and the last.  Although I didn't agree with your initial post on this thread (or frankly to many that you've made of late), I didn't comment on it.  This may have been out of deference to the old Tomcat whose opinions I valued from the FireShelby days.  I was referring to lilly who started the thread.  Not to put too fine a point on it, but repressed guilt seems to manifest itself in some odd ways.  As they say, "thank you for sharing".  I wouldn't know how to e-mail you privately if I wanted to, which I don't.  Let's continue to be board colleagues and play a little more fairly, shall we?

And lilly, if I have misunderstood and thus mis-represented you or your intentions as a new and sincere poster or if I have maligned you in any way, I apologize.  Hope you will contribute constructively.

Austin Eagle and Truth4USM - please forgive the little sidebar...you are correct that there are some personal issues in CBED...let's see if we can't get the players to make nice for a higher cause...

Okay, Tired of Board Manipulation, let's think about this a minute more.  I admit to being a supporter of the idea that all merit raise money be given to staff.  From what I read, so do USM Symphathizer, lilly, Anita Stamper and others.  If that stance puts me on the "dark side" then these others who share my "personal agenda" sit there right along with me.  I've tried to imagine what world that those who fight for good to triumph over evil (e.g., Superman) are considered to sit on the "dark side."  I guess the simplest answer is Lex Luthor's.

Who are you, TOBM.  Passive aggressiveness is possibly a matter of degree.  You came on this board with an unused moniker (who's passive aggressive now?).

I've got you narrowed down to 4 or 5 people.  You all live in the same neighborhood (I think).  Let's get to a question:  What do you know about "operation crawfish"?

tomcat,

I agree with you and others with respect to giving staff raises...from what I hear, though, "some" staff are already on "the list" in the CBED, while others remain on the outside looking in.  Perhaps TOBM thinks giving everyone on staff a raise will dilute the power that may be asserted at a later date.

I don't fish in buckets.  That's the second day in a row that people have just made it too easy for me.  Good malapropisms are supposed to be challenging.  This one is pretty funny though, Tired Of.
