I got the statement below from the message posted by the president Amy Young as to why this board was created. I think members here need to read it again:
“The USM chapter of the AAUP is pleased to host this message board so that ideas and information can be easily exchanged for all who care to see. Please keep in mind that freedom of expression requires tolerance of ideas that we might not like, and the views expressed on this board do not necessarily reflect the policies and statements of the American Association of University Professors.”
The reason more faculty do not come here is because of the way people with different opinions get treated. I posted my message about getting a PR person and why I think faculty should start going through that PR person. Less than one minute after I posted it—which was not even enough time to read it—someone posted an ugly reply that had absolutely no substantive value to it other than to scare me off. No more than 10 minutes after that a second reply came and nitpicked every single sentence. His fast reply shows that he did not even consider my thoughts and that he had already made up his mind and it could not be changed.
Ok then. I am not going to stay around to see how many more of you jump on me. I knew beforehand what I was going to get. You win. Goodbye.
If you didn't want your ideas critiqued and challenged, then why did you post on this board? If you're going to post something here, you need to be prepared to defend it. Everyone here understands that. You have a right to express your opinion, and I have a right to express mine. You are welcome to take my post and critique it line by line. I welcome the input.
Donut Girl, I did that and I apologize. Part of what we do on this board is entertainment. Sometimes, the entertainment is crude, sometimes it's making cheap shots. Malapropism has a board personality that began with poking fun at a play on words. There was such a malapropism waiting to happen on your post that I couldn't help myself. I'm sorry...I was wrong. After indulging myself, I did read your thoughtful post. I do not represent the board - only myself - and I should not have the power to scare you away.
Many more faculty members read the board than post on it. I am sure Malapropism mean no harm. Although sometimes very direct, they sometimes provide a spirit of humor which we so desparetly need at point in USM's history.

That is definitely one reason, but the main reason more do not come here is because many of them are still learning how to use the Internet. :)

As I recall, one of your former VPAA's proclaimed that he was going to make USM one of the most computer literate campuses in America. Did that not happen?

Hey N2ME, you can't get a fair shake over here. I too share your views. I heard the Varsity Voice is going to have a message board online. Let's meet over there this fall and discuss these issues with others.

You cannot teach an old dog new tricks, right? Maybe when more leave and the next generation comes in, we will get that computer-literate campus. I must say, though, the computer savy faculty on campus have more than doubled over the last two years...obviously because younger faculty are coming in though.

This was a professional thing to do, and I respect you for it. Can we get Truth4USM to act the same way?
The CoST types take all of this very seriously and contemplate the philosophical consequences of the ideas before replying.
The Arts&Letters types are good a word games, pay close attention to spelling and grammar and the entertainment value of language. Unfortunately, when you mix these two styles precise communication on complex issues becomes confused.
