"The exodus of good faculty and some not so good faculty will continue, and their replacements will be of lower quality."
Could this be any more pessimistic? Why would the new faculty coming in be worse than the stale ones waiting to retire? Where do the notions of "new ideas" fit in this type of thinking? The new ones will be doing new research because they have not yet gotten board. The new ones will be less self-centered and less worried about Thames and will write no letters to the local media about him.

There are two trains of thought. One, faculty that come here may stay three years and go off to better opportunities and higher $. These may be excellent teachers/professors and researchers. But in a year or two, when they see for themselves the situtation SFT and his administration have placed this institution, they will be come educated and leave.
Two, certain faculty positions will not be filled by those individuals who are excellent teachers, but by those who were fourth or fifth on the position search. One-Three who may have been a "prize" to have on our faculty have elected to "pass" USM up because of the situation here at USM. We are replacing "good and not so good" faculty with even lower quality teachers/professors.
The new ones will "have not yet gotten board." ??? Do you get lumber when you take a job at USM?

It annoys me when people make statements of "fact" with no possible evidence on which to base them.
Problems in administration are a major reason faculty steer clear of a university when considering jobs. USM, to understate things substantially, has "problems in administration." Hiring a cabal (related by partnerships and marriage) to be senior administrators...then cutting 2/3 of them loose ...after how long?...changing the other 1/3's job..etc...etc...etc. Does that show a clear mission? Leadership? Decisiveness?

My goodness. Did you just join this bulletin board. Probably 99% of the posts here have that characteristic. This is not a journal. It is a place for opinion, and you have not been nominated for Bulletin Board Policeman.
Thank you for correcting my spelling error. Of course it shows that you are petty, have lost the argument, and are trying to distract readers from the obviously effective message. I thank you for that too.
N2ME - what argument are you trying to make exactly? All I've gotten from you is that individual faculty should be quiet as not to upset the common man working at Burger King. Please clarify - I've gotten nothing out of your posts that offers anything constructive to the ultimate cause of making USM a better place to work and study...

Thankfully, we have a webmaster who holds the title of Bulletin Board Policeman.

Your astounding jump of logic (Otherside corrects my spelling, therefore s/he must be petty and has lost the argument) shows your true nature. Do you have nothing better to do on a holiday weekend? Go enjoy the fireworks among the common men and women. When you have constructed a real argument that makes sense, then post it here. We'll be waiting.
There are several reasons why replacement faculty on average will be of lower quality. Some have been touched on by earlier. The grapevine that works on a discipline-by-discipline basis has already carried the news that things are not going well at USM and as national meetings commence in the fall, the news will be updated. Another reason is that it takes quality faculty to recruit quality faculty. Knowledgeable candidates check with faculty that have regional and national reputations. If USM has none or few in a discipline, it sends a strong negative signal. If there are such faculty at USM, they will not lie to a candidate about the USM or the department. It destroys their credibility and they will have a new colleague that knows you lied to him/her. Another is that we do not have the resources to compete nationally and in the past depended upon the package of a congenial place where on could get their research done and leave in a good-sized pleasant community. Much of that has been lost, the climate at USM is not conducive to work and many in the community think faculty as people suck. Do not overlook that we have many new administrators of dubious quality. They will not impress quality candidates. Finally, it would be hard to walk onto this campus and not pick the bad vibes that are everywhere. I am sure that other posters have additional reasons that will handicap our recruiting.
Nope...been here from the beginning. Most posts are not stated as if there are "fact" based on ZERO factual evidence.
your misuse of the term board was the highlight of your post...it went downhill after that
