From USM Press release regarding donation of land by James and Betty Barr:
The Barrs’ gift is included in the university’s comprehensive campaign called "$100 Million Campaign for Southern Miss." The silent phase of the campaign began in 1997. The kickoff was announced April 20, 2001, during the foundation’s annual black-tie celebration. The campaign is scheduled to end June 30, 2004. "With the close of the campaign upon us, we are busy tallying final figures," said Ryan. "We will also have our outside accounting firm confirm those figures, and expect to make a final campaign announcement within the coming weeks." Campaign priorities were developed with input from staff, administration, development and athletic personnel, alumni, and friends of the university. Campaign priorities identified are merit scholarships, faculty and staff development, Gulf Coast campus expansion, libraries, technology and athletics.
