JACKSON, Miss. - Higher education officials on Wednesday gave final approval to a plan to keep open the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast branch of the University of Southern Mississippi....

...USM's Long Beach campus will be rebuilt and the university is looking for land to build an additional campus on the coast. Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith said USM would like to build a campus on 100 to 150 acres north of Interstate 10 and east of U.S. 49.

The Mississippi Legislature approved a bill to allow USM to borrow up to $150 million to start rebuilding its hurricane-ravaged campuses, especially on the Gulf Coast....

...In other business, the board approved an increase in the University of Mississippi Foundation's annual salary supplement for Chancellor Robert Khayat. The supplement will increase to $199,000 from $160,000.

With the foundation supplement and a state-approved salary increase, Khayat's pay will be about $410,000 a year, officials said.

Meredith said the foundation wanted to increase the supplement to bring Khayat's salary in line with the salary of the Mississippi State University president....
