State university presidents likely to get raises

Salary increases of $10,000 are expected to be approved for the leaders of Mississippi's four larger universities....

... The raises would be 5 percent for each of the campus chief executives under a plan recommended by Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith. The proposal will be discussed at the board's monthly meeting in Jackson. If approved, the raises would go into effect July 1....

...Jackson State University President Ronald Mason and Shelby Thames also receive $200,000 apiece in state salary and $50,000 each from their schools' private foundations. Their state pay would climb to $210,000....

...It's up to the board to consider a raise for Meredith, who now gets $325,000 annually.

If these raises were based on MERIT, SFT would not get a 5% raise.  Why doesn't merit count for the presidents?

Because giving him the same raise as all the others is the path of least resistance.
