I was told that someone who works under Dr. Dana Thames was arrested today for embezzlement. The person who told me this said they heard it form more than one source. Does anybody have any information to confirm or refute this rumor?
This person has a fairly common name - is there proof positive that this was the person who once was in FE?? It's hard to imagine that under Pierce's and DT's watchful eyes - anything could be amiss. And don't start with the scapegoat deCasal stuff . . . she was watched like a hawk (scraping the bare bones of funding) too. This isn't the first time the threat of crying "embezellment" has occured in the COEP. The bully-on-the-playground threat gave a former assist. dean the impetus to get out.
The person that was arrested for embezzlement was the director of OEFE and it was the result of months of investigation by the Hattiesburg police. There were three charges and the amount was over $8,000.00 and were funds from an honor scociety that were deposited into a personal account. The current president of the honor society discovered the missing funds and began an inquiry which resulted in the investigation and arrest. Her name is common but it is her. The brief blurb in the HA was under the crime report and simply stated she was arrested for embezzlement. She has since bonded out.
In addition to the missing funds from the honor society, she was $37000 in the hole by October for the 05-06 academic year. So there was also misappropriation of funds.

OFE did not report to deCasal. It was a direct report to the Dean. About 90% of placements were for CISE, and thus DT had a lot of influence there. It is now a direct report to DT.
The 35K may or may not represent misappropriation-it could also represent poor fiscal planning or oversight by the Dean's office, or mismanagement by OFE (not quite the same as misappropriation). A number of COEP departments have dug major holes for themselves in the past by mid fiscal year. The honor society money appears to be a bigger problem.
90% of placements are not from CISE. If that were the case we would only have about 30 graduates from 7-12 and K-12 areas. Please don't post idiotic stats.

That number comes from Dean Pierce. He has bandied it around to justify the move of OFE to CISE. The number may be idiotic, but that is the one he has been using. Don't shoot the messenger. What is your take on the breakdown of students who transition through OFE?
For this issue they need to investigate the President's home, his expense account, the Lab and other things. Need less to say, he spends University monies for his own personal -- employees doing personal work for him on the University clock and as we all know the airplane.
If this director of Field Experience did indeed take the money - she reaps what she sows. However, I wish that consistency in supervision would exist for all people and not the ones that ruffle Foghorn Leghorn's feathers.
(Contemplating next person to take out. Must talk to Daddy)

That is what you gonna hear from the head rooster if you start poking under his rock. Once you look over into his building it's not hard to find a bunch of state and federal paid employees working full time to support his private bidness on university time.
