MSU strategic planning' team works toward August deadline

STARKVILLE - Mississippi State University's first stage of its bottom-up study, which will set the university's agenda for years to come, includes recommendations ranging from getting a Phi Betta Kappa chapter to rethinking the school's desired enrollment.

Task Force Team, the group announced in April to handle research for MSU's strategic planning initiative, continues gathering data and recommendations to forward to a larger group - the State of the Future planning committee. The planning process will end in August when MSU President Robert "Doc" Foglesong announces the university's long-term agenda. ...

...One recommendation Gilbert's group made involved the appropriate size of the university. Previously the university's target enrollment was set at 20,000 students.

"I think we're going to re-evaluate that and look at how realistic it is," Gilbert said. ...

...Pike, who also oversees the campus environment area of the task force, said the review will help make the university more efficient.

"There's a lot of duplication," Pike said. "I didn't realize until we started that there are like five different organizations responsible for custodial services done on campus."...

Oh no!  MSU is going for quality instead of quantity.  I bet they don't even have Economic Development listed as a major goal.  This could be bad news for USM.

Until the IHL board changes the overall mission for the system, economic developmentation will remain in all the universities' mission. That's board policy & not institutional choice.

The bad news for USM is that Foglesong has some serious leadership abilities. He's not quite what one would expect for a retired 4-star general, but my bet is that his political skills will make SFT look like a crass amateur.

Though you mean well, you are really showing your stupidity. Leadership was defined by the military services. A man of General Foglesong caliber traces his military pedigree directly back to the heros of our history. Do not confuse the policies of the heads of the government the public is stupid enough to elect and their appointees with the military.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

Its always nice to see and out-and-out, unabashed fascist on the message board. Reminds me of my youth in Chile in the 1970s.

Oh I do enjoy being taken out of context. Foglesong simply doesn't come off as a former 4-star general. He is confident but modest, almost self effacing, enthusiastic about a number of things that would deceive even the most cynical observers into thinking they were dealing with a lifelong academic. He does not come off as authoritarian, although I am sure he can be authoritarian when the situation merits it.

Well, I guess I can forgive you, since Semper Fi is a Marine Corps kind of thing. Probably not a lot of PhDs in chemical engineering running around the Corps. (And that's exactly the degree Foglesong holds -- from WVU.)
