Sorry if this link is not active, but wanted to share.

Front page of the HA has U of Iowa asking USM to change it's logo.

Sorry, but if someone would post an active link I would appreciate it.

FYI, University of Iowa's mascot is the Hawkeye, Iowa officials have stated in the article that USM's new logo "looks toom much like the Hawkeye's" logo. This will result in possible litigation and $ to Iowa if USM has to settle out of court.

If Iowa thinks the USM athletic logo has been usurped from them, then how about the USM athletic slogan "Any Place, Any Time, Anywhere?" That was the slogan of the famous lst Air Commando Group in World War II. Back to the drawing board, fellas.

Any Place, Any Time, Anywhere

One training mission went tragically wrong when two gilders on tow collided with each other during takeoff resulting in one of the gliders crashing killing the 3 Americans and 4 British troops on board. The Americans had feared that this accident would mean that the British would now be less willing to fly with them, instead they received a note from a Chindit commander saying "Please be assured that we will go with your boys any place, any time, anywhere". This phrase became the motto of the unit.

1st Air Commando Group

The unit commenced operations in February 1944 attacking enemy targets in Burma to prepare for the Chindit invasion.

From the article:
"I don't know about what's going on between Southern Miss and Iowa," Richardson said Thursday. "But I do know when you talk about comparisons with graphics, the athletic marketplace is such a crowded field that comparisons are inevitable."

I have to agree with Richardson here. There are only so many mascots to go around and with all the bears, tigers, eagles, etc. there are bound to be similarities. If you look at the previous USM "attack eagle" logo you will notice it looks similar to the Marquette University logo, so going back won't exactly fix the problem.

When the new logo came out, there was lots of talk on Eagle Talk about how similar it was to the Iowa logo. It's not like this is a surprise. I wonder if Iowa was consulted at the time.

Since when does a red-blooded male (or female) from South Mississippi give a damn about what the University of Iowa thinks about our logo?  Those corn-fed losers can just get over it.....

Something tells Seeker that this would have never been an issue had USM not hired Larry Eustachy the individual that put a dagger through the heart of the Iowa basketball program.

My risk manager says that they don't have a legal leg to stand on and that they are just trying to bull the "po' little schools down south".

I think the USM slogan is something like "anyone, anywhere, any time".  But your point is well taken: almost anything can appear to be derivative.

Thanks for the story about the lst Air Commando Group.

But I'm getting real confused with both you and the Shadow posting here.  Exactly what are those secrets that lurk in the hearts of men?

When I used my U of I Hawkeye credit card at the USM Bookstore a month ago, the clerk said, "Oh, I haven't seen the new USM credit cards."  Similar look?  I'd say so!

But to counter that point, when I was buying a Southern Miss Jersey with the #4 on the back the other day in the book store the girl asked who Fav-re was? So, I wouldn't read too much into what a ditzy clerk at the book store thinks.

Didn't Eustachy come from Iowa State, not the University of Iowa?

I don't think this logo...

... looks very much at all like the USM logo. But maybe Louisville (Loserville) might have a case...

If Iowa is serious about pushing this, they will win.  They are a Big XI, have more clout than USM, and merchandise sales are much more important for them.

Yes, Eustacy was at Iowa St, the arch rival of Iowa. While he was at Iowa St, you saw a dramatic shift in the two basketball programs, ISU got a huge boost, while Iowa (traditionally strong) dropped to the bottom of the Big 10, not Big 12.

Hopefully, ram, those secrets will be revealed in a sequel to Exit 13. I believe another poster suggested that it be named for the exit number of one of the Hattiesburg U.S. 81 exitways.  I'll not be the author of any such book, but there must be enough secrets to enable somebody to produce two or three volumes.

Yes, I suggested it yesterday.... Exit 65.   65 doesn't have the charm of lucky # 13, though.

My innate love of conspiracy theories aside, I think the story in the paper that Iowa officials simply hadn't noticed the logo until the Eustachy hiring got so much press in Iowa is probably correct.

I really liked Giannini's quote: "They are both bird heads & they're both the same color". Priceless.

Well, wait a minute...6+5=11 and 1+1=2 and 11+2=13 so maybe it works after all.

You have to remember that plagiarism is a USM specialty. Heck, McCain library was named after a president who plagiarized two master's theses. (I'm not making this up, it is in Exit 13.)

I've read Exit 13, and you are NOT making this up.

As I remember it McCain published, with his student(s), part of the material from the student’s thesis. The student had plagiarized and someone discovered it from reading the publication.

Do I remember incorrectly?

Don't be confused, Ram. I am sure you recall from those 15-minute radio serials that Lamont Cranston is the wealthy, debonaire alter-ego of the Shadow. Be assured that Lamont Cranston is definitely not the same person as The Shadow who also posts on this message board. Hmmm. Debonaire? I like that. Say it again. Debonaire. Once more please.

Gosh, do I feel like an idiot...When Lamont Cranston started posting by name, I thought it was another brave soul who had come out of the closet.  I even looked him up on the USM website.  Finding nothing, I assumed he was no longer with the university so I checked out Babbs list...my interest was not piqued enough to pursue it further so I just forgot about it, until now.  This is very funny.

That's not exactly what happened.

In Exit 13, it is shown that 60 of 65 paragraphs of an article McCain published in the Journal of Mississippi History came directly from the Emory University masters thesis of one Frances Racine. He had never met Ms. Racine. She complained to the journal editor (to no avail) and finally to the AAUP and the American Historical Association. The latter group created a committee to investigate and they found that "Dr. McCain's article represents a violation of approved scholarly usage with respect to another author's literary property."
