The University of Southern Mississippi will operate its main campus in Hattiesburg with $6 million more in fiscal 2005 than it had this budget year, which ends June 30. The state College Board approved FY2005 budgets for the eight state universities when it met last week in Jackson. “The total budget for Hattiesburg this year will be roughly $131 million, up from last year which was $125 million,” said Greg Lassen, vice president for financial affairs. State appropriations for institutions of higher learning coupled with money raised by Southern Miss, including that from a 6 percent tuition increase, will allow officials to give some faculty and staff merit raises. When the raises will go into effect hasn’t been decided, Lassen said.
