I do not mean to belittle our commencement speaker, but does anyone find it striking that GW Bush spoke at MGCCC commencement, while Bush the elder and Clinton were both at Tulane's ceremony?
I suppose there was major PR repair work going on in both places. Btw, somebody pointed out to me that GHWB, GWB and BC were in the same fraternity at Yale.

Are you talking about "Skull & Bones?" John Kerry was a member...to my knowledge, Bill Clinton was not. The Bush legacy goes back to George Bush's grandfather, who is rumored to have stolen Geronimo's skull for use in Skull rites. It's supposed to still be in the Tomb (the Skulls' meetin' place).

I don't know how far in advance USM issues a commencement speaker invitation, but I understand MGCCC President Willis Lott wrote a letter to GWB back in October inviting him to speak at the May ceremony.

I am not sure what you mean by "finding it striking". If you mean it points out the difference between USM and other places, the answer is yes. If you are expressing surprise that it occurred, I would be tempted to answer by saying "Grasshopper, have you learned nothing from your experiences? You must go and meditate on your lack of insight.
That said, my take is you were pointing out the former and wished to have it noted as one more signal of how low rent USM has become. While some might think it trivial, it is one more reminder of how screwed up this place has become. Here we are building a building with the name Trent Lott on it (under financed) and he asks George Bush to speak at a community college. Go figure.
