GULFPORT - Students at the University of Southern Mississippi who are interested in science and math could receive financial help from a California foundation.
University officials announced Thursday the Beckman Foundation has donated $1 million for scholarships for students affected by Hurricane Katrina.
"We are grateful that the Beckman Foundation has stepped forward to ensure that a generation of scientists and inventors has not been washed away by Katrina," said USM President Shelby Thames. "It gives us scholarship support so that the young people devastated by Katrina's wind and surge will not also have their futures in science and math ravaged."
The $1 million gift will be spent over five years as scholarships to students who were hard-hit by Katrina. The students must major in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, polymer science or engineering.
Gov. Haley Barbour and George L. Argyros, chairman of the board of the Beckman Foundation, were present for the announcement....

I wonder why the other sciences, Geology, Physics, Marine Science, etc. were left out.
maybe this answers your question. from the foundation's website:
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation makes grants to program-related, non-profit research institutions to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments, and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The Foundation does not consider proposals that fall outside of these programs.

Did you say non- profit? Are we still non-profit? What's all that talk about making faculty millionaires? Money for the privileged few seems to be our tag line.
USM Receives $1 Million Grant May 5, 2006 09:47 AM
USM will soon receive a grant for $1 million, thanks to the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation.
That grant will establish the Beckman Presidential Scholars program for students interested in the sciences and impacted by Hurricane Katrina. After making a few connections, one important phone call started it all.
"I found out that ambassador Argyros was the chairman of the Beckman Foundation and that he and Governor Barbour were friends. And, of course, when I found that out, I immediately called Governor Barbour and said, 'I need your help and I need it bad and I need it right now.' And he said, 'Okay,'" said USM president Dr. Shelby Thames....
If I could somehow find out who you are, I'd like to punch you right in the lip for your comment.
A benevolent donor (with no apparent tie to the area or admin) gives generously to prospective students and you find fault in in it. Or yet, a way to belittle those at USM that you assume would not steward the gift appropriately.
You must have a self-esteem problem. As I understand, USM produces many wonderful psychologists and even psychiatrists. You should visit one (or more) soon
