Elliott--We're pulling for you. We really want you to grab the brass ring this time. We think you'd love Texas. Get a good night's sleep the night before the interview and tell them whatever they want to hear. We'll vouch for you.
For all the constant ill will on this board toward the man, has anyone noticed that Pood has stood up and fought the good fight on a few important issues recently? Or is it impossible to admit that someone you have an aversion to actually does things right from time to time?
Pood may sometimes have good intentions, but it is well known that he plays favorites, fears potential rivals, and is basically incompetent. He is just not a very smart man. My only fear about him leaving is no endorsement of him, but I wonder who in the world Shelby will put in as an "interim." It cannot be any of the three associate deans since they are all severely inexperienced, so that leaves who?

B.D. wrote: Black Cat and Dodge the Bullet -- your remarks are interesting but cryptic. Can you explain?
Well, how do we expose this latest atrocity without picking on the beneficiary unduly? Let's just say that my friends in history are livid about the very lucrative (five figures) raise that one of their colleagues just received at Pood's insistence. This faculty member does not have near the academic achievement of many others in the department but is now paid more than all but two in that department, both of whom have far more and better academic reputations than this person. This is a further example of the lack of academic quality control at USM and the impact of promotion/raise criteria based on cronyism and the "good ole boy" syndrome. It stinks to high heaven and would not be tolerated at a reputable institution. Who is the person being referred to: ask around - ask Pood what his favorite thing to do outside of being a dean is and you'll get the field this person works in. In fact, Pood has made the field this person works in the entire new focus of the department - and we wonder why people like Bolton, Bond, and the several others left? This is one of the reasons.
Actually I was referring to a faculty member who committed a classroom faux pas and could have been left out in a world of trouble and Pood backed that faculty member up when he would appear to have no personal or agenda-following reason to do so. Maybe that was the kind of "good fight" that B.D. was referring to.
