Southern Miss Polymer Science Degrees Available to SREB Member States

Hattiesburg – The University of Southern Mississippi’s internationally recognized polymer science degree programs are now available to residents living in member states of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) through the SREB’s Academic Common Market.

The Academic Common Market (ACM) provides students the opportunity to enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program at a university in another state without having to pay out-of-state tuition, if that program of study is not offered by the a higher education institution in the student’s home state. Participating states save money through the ACM by not having to establish and maintain a program already offered by another member state.

“This opens up opportunities for students outside of the state, as well as those living in Mississippi, to enroll in one of the best academic programs in the world,” said Dr. Marek Urban, director of the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials. “Southern Miss offers the only undergraduate degree program in polymer science and engineering anywhere, and graduates of the program have tremendous job opportunities and are successful in graduate school.”

SREB members include Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, West Virginia, Texas, Maryland and Kentucky.

“The polymer science program at Southern Miss is internationally recognized for excellence,” said Dr. Rex Gandy, dean of the College of Science and Technology. “This arrangement with SREB is indicative of the high quality of the program.”

Each member state has a coordinator for the ACM.

Gandy learns fast (from Thames).  He wants to call the SREB's Academic Common Market a ranking (much like the "Carnegie Rankings").

Exactly. The only thing this is indicative of is that there isn't another Polymer Science program available in the SREB. Has zip, zilch, nada to do with quality (other than that special Chemical X quality that comes with the moniker "wurl' class").
