Just 2 complete seasons into the USM portion of his career and Larry Eustachy has already signed 21 players to USM. He signed 5 his first Spring (2004), 9 during the 2004-05 school year, and 7 so far this year. He said yesterday that he expects to sign 2 or 3 more in the coming days. Not only will that bring his total to 23 or 24 players signed in 2.5 years, but will mean that 2 or 3 current players will have to be dismissed. Signing 21-24 players for basketball in such a short period of time is unreal.
Yesterday he called this new class a "monster class," that he rates easily as a "A" level class. It's really amazing that he continues to generate such hype with media and fans given that his overall record the last few years is so dismal. In another turn, the long story about ISU and USM basketball that was posted here some weeks ago made it over to Eagle Talk in the last day or so. It's interesting how many ETers were awakened to some LE stats that are not that impressive. Something to follow in the future.
2 considerations: all this signing will kill USM's graduation rate in men's basketball. The HA story about team cum GPAs the other day showed that the basketball team is teetering on the academic brink; also, the NCAA will surely be watching events here closely with all of the dismissal/signing activity that's been going on.
American seems happy to write about this "top 5 signing class" but they failed to follow up on the players to be dismissed(or as E says "advised they will have limited playing time).
Not only has Eustachy made some pretty amazing player personnel decisions, e.g. Jasper Johnson, now he is going public with his recruiting policies. A real D-I player would never consider USM unless he had alot of baggage.
Bower wants to graduate every player and Eustachy does care if his players make it thru the spring semester.
I would guess this time next year USM fans will be talking about the new mens B-ball coach and his rebuilding plans.
Heres the link to the HA story about the Monster recruiting class.
Eustachy did say that he has told players they would not see much playing time, and they made the decision to leave his program. "We've brought some players in here that haven't worked out, but I've really, really enjoyed every player that came in our locker room."
Odd, I've never thought about that being the objective of a college basketball program.
