People are in parts of Hattiesburg is that Noel Polk may leave USM for MSU in a few months.

What a loss it would be for USM.

Has anyone else heard this happening?

For selfish reasons, let's hope this is a vicious rumor!!!  But, let's be honest, could anyone blame him for going???

I've heard this as more than rumor but not quite fact.  The word is that they want him, but he is in Japan so can't negotiate right now.  Is it true?  Not sure.

I can vouch that he is in Japan.  I'm sure he'll address this when he gets back.

I would strongly encourage him to go. The administration of USM, the IHL, and the community of Hattiesburg will only learn the consequences of treating faculty like hired help if the university's top scholars pack up and leave.

If he went to another IHL institution, it would send no message whatsoever to the IHL board, except that if they let the Shelboid stay in office, they can get even more of the top USM faculty to relocate to Mistake & Ole Myth.

On June 12 and13 of this year 2004, the William Faulkner Society of Japan will celebrate the pre-year of the 50th anniversary of Faulkner's visit of Japan by holding the International Faulkner Symposium at the Surugadai Memorial Hall of Chuo University in mid-Tokyo, with a generous financial support from the International Exchange Fund of Chuo University.

The topic we will discuss is "History and Memory in Faulkner's Novels." The speakers are: Thadious M. Davis (Vanderbilt U, USA), Kang Hee (Daegu U, South Korea), Nicole Moulinoux (U. of Rennes, France), Noel Polk (U of Southern Mississippi, USA), Hans H. Skei (U of Oslo, Norway), Michael Zeitlin (U of British Columbia, Canada), FUJIHIRA Ikuko (Chuo U, Tokyo), HIRAISH Takaki (U of Tokyo, Tokyo), KOYAMA Toshio (Kwansei Gakuin U, Osaka), NIIRO Takuya (Musashi U, Tokyo), OWADA Eiko (Waseda U, Tokyo), TANAKA Hisao (Hiroshima U, Hiroshima), and TANAKA Takako (Nagoya City U, Nagoya)."

SHELBY!! LOOK HERE!

Here is someone who is WORLD CLASS!!! Isn't it interesting that some of Shelby's biggest critics are, actually world class, not just world class in their own imaginations?

Thanks for the chuckle, foot soldier.  You're right on target, as usual!

I really doubt that this rumor is true. Noel is in fact in Japan and will be traveling various places during the summer, so his absence from the Burg is not ominous.

What is true about the rumor is that the University has showed no sign of valuing Noel's work in the way it should be valued. His recent struggle to get the Dean and the upper administration simply to honor the original terms of the University's long-standing committment to him indicates the depth of the problem.

I don't believe he's leaving us for MSU, but if he were, would it be any great surprise, considering the University's attitude?

(and by the way, NO QUARTER)
