Many in our community are greatly concerned about the large number of faculty departures. This is a very legitimate concern . Yet there is a problem in Hattiesburg much more serious and potentially deadly. Our police officers are leaving in droves. Many of the most experienced and most dedicated have moved to other jobs,in most cases taking substantial pay cuts. By and large they are people who have left because of the terrible leadership of the police chief and the mayor. Unlike many USM faculty members, they haven't gone to a better paying job,but instead have left an intolerable work enviornment. to work for less money. The sad thing is that the mayor and his allies have played the race card in an effort to save a police chief considered incompetent by many of his own officers. The even sadder thing is that local faculty members are prominent members of the mayor's team.
Now thatHenry Naylor has spoken about the need to discuss the resignations of seasoned officers, it appears race is no longer an issue. When will it end?
Friends in Hattiesburg tell me that things are bad all over--and these are not just university folks. First, it was SFT, the turmoil, the bad press, and the faculty exodus. Then it was problems with city government. Finally it was Katrina. They say the city will never be the same and cite the huge numbers on antidepressants. This post addresses what they have told me about the city--and again, these are townies as well as gownies.
Perhaps HPD needs a board to vent on as well. Should we offer the use of this one until they are up and running with their own? It would probably be quite informative.

Councilwoman Deborah Denardo was on this evenings news and directly accused whites of racism. The racial issue lives out of necessity. If someone is doing a sorry job and can't blame racism then the problem must lie within. Hence we must blame any shortcoming on racism. DuPree's USM faculty apologists need to take note.
