I was perusing the school website and decided to look at the admin's site. I was taken back by Shelby's little paragraph about the president's duties. I may be crazy, but this doesn't seem like a good way to introduce yourself to potential students especially given the terrible press he's been getting. I looked at OM's site and didn't see anything like this from Khayat (sp?). The tone is totally SFT and basically there is no point to it other than to send a message to professors and students - I am the all powerful dome gnome. However, it may have always been on the site. Read this and please respond:
"Appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), the President of The University of Southern Mississippi is charged with serving as both the chief executive officer and principal educational officer. In general terms, the President is responsible to the Board of Trustees for every facet of institutional operations.
Specifically, the IHL Board delegates to its university presidents administrative control of the universities over which they preside. This includes responsibility for the administration of the divisions and departments of each institution and for keeping its expenditures strictly in harmony with the budget authorized by the IHL Board.
The President also must take the initiative in shaping the University's educational policy and academic standards in cooperation with the State Commissioner of Higher Education. The President has final authority over all employees. The President also is charged with the responsibility of maintaining appropriate standards of student conduct. "

Thanks, Capitol Eagle, for calling attention to this. At most universities, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, or the Provost, is the principal educational (academic) officer. Is it now different at USM? My, how fast things change.
I am no academic and don't pretend to be, but the recent hearings were evidence enough to me that, no, in fact, the president is not the ultimate authority over faculty. Heck, were the hearings not settled, Shelby's opinion would have been one of three recommendations.
My point in posting this thread was who is SFT trying to reach with this description of the president's duties? It appears to me that he only wants to convey his authority, which does not enhance the reputation of USM, or his for that matter, at the moment. In fact it is somewhat embarrasing to me. What a selfish and stupid little man he truly is (good ideas, but little else except ego). If you can't tell, I am an alumnus that is disgusted with the situation.

I can't help but be reminded of Cartman (who SFT sort of resembles, come to think of it) on South Park saying, "Respect my authori-tay!" Such a little man (SFT, that is), such a large ego.
