More college searches near Several positions expected to be open within the next few years
By Richard Lake
The search is over at Mississippi State University, but state higher education officials soon might have to conduct several more presidential searches....
...Meredith said the board will review the process used in the MSU search to see if any changes need to be made.
But if there are any, he said, they likely won't be significant.
"Officials said the search to replace USM's Thames, which is expected to be launched this fall, likely will be conducted in much the same way: Secretly."
Will Virginia Newton still be the IHL president next year, during the search for SFT's successor? Is there ANY likelihood that the search will be postponed or sabotaged, so that SFT remains in power?

Thames is the reason that the reformers on the board (including Newton and Blakeslee) have the upper hand. Thames is the reason for the "secret" search mode (in order to shut out the good ole boys who invariably corrupt "open" searches with back room dealing). Thames is history....

I had not thought of this, but it does make sense. Several members of the IHL make a stink about not agreeing with any candidate next year so they decided to cancel the search and start a new one. Therefore, we need an "interim" president and why not just ask SFT to stay one more year. Then, Ole Miss and possibly the W needs presidential searches and the board claims they cannot possibly do 3 in one year and ask SFT to hang around one more year...

Her term is up in May 2006. Magee takes over. After Magee's term expires in May 2007, the Board switches to a new system of electing one of their own rather than simply taking turns as president. The new system allows presidents to serve more than once but not for consecutive terms.
In addition to the politics of campus presidential searches next year, watch for board members themselves to be jockeying to become the post-Magee Board president.

Makes sense to me. We need about 2 more years of declining enrollments, faculty exodus, eliminating Ph.D. programs, transfer of the coast to UM, etc. and mission accomplished. SFT and company might even be able to accomplish getting the athletic program to D-II if they really worked at it. I'm sure the folks over at Eagle Talk could even blame the faculty for that.

I understand that you are slightly jesting, but people here often make similar statements. It is a long time before we will lose PhD programs. There are at least 2 schools that should loose PhD programs before USM (and we do produce the most PhDs in Mississippi). As for athletics, maybe D I-AA, but we will never be a D II. The athletic facilities of many D II schools are more comparable to a Mississippi high school. You don't have many 33k football stadiums in D II. And as long as more than 15k people show up to football games, we will remain in D I-A. Even if our facilities are never upgraded, we only have 2 choices, drop scholarships and go to D III or stay in D IA, because there is no money in I-AA or II.
Aren't most of those doctorates in Education? That's the feeling I get at commencement. We'll probably be allowed to keep those and other programs related to our premier status in teacher education.
