WLOX reports that a compromise has been reached on the state budget: "Lawmakers finished work Sunday on a proposed state government spending plan for the next fiscal year after reaching an agreement on how much funding would go to higher education.

Under the proposed budget, the state will spend a total of $855 million on universities and junior colleges in the fiscal year beginning July 1, said House Appropriations Chairman Johnny Stringer, D-Montrose."

and "Stringer said the universities are getting about $20 million more than they received last year, and junior colleges are getting $19.4 million more."

Has anyone heard what this may mean for USM?

More light poles.

It is interesting that the administration has consistently predicted the worst and rejected hires, including replacement hires, ushered in a plan to cut GAs, and taken control of development accounts when it appears that Southern may actually receive an increase in its state funding.

I have heard the 5% raise figure mentioned a few places on campus for faculty raises. Has anyone else heard that? Any word on how (merit, across the board, a combination)? When?

Just curious when those fireworks will ignite.

You can bet that Papa Doc will first skim some juice off the top, and will then make sure his friends and family take the first drink at the well. He will resist COL and compression adjustments, and any "merit" pay will be micromanaged to death. Just his way of saying "have a nice day!" as he exits the island to a place in the sun with numbered bank accounts and no extradition agreements.

From what I've heard, the intent of the legislature is 5% across the board beginning in July. No 2.5% in July & additional 2.5% in January if money is available, but the full raise for the entire year. This is all scuttlebutt at this time.

Nursing faculty will be excepted from this. My understanding is that nursing faculty will get flat $8,000 raises as part of a separate piece of legislation.

The nurse faculty supplement is still 6500.00 per year for two years unless it has been raised to 8,000.00 in the past two days.  This is for all nursing faculty, university and community colleges.  USM still doesn't have applicants so unsure if this will help new hires but it certainly will help KEEP faculty who might be looking to leave.  Maybe.

$8,000 and a check-out counter at Albertson's for an office.
