Interesting how the title of the article is "USM names new Presidential Scholars," but then they are not announced in the article (unless I missed something). Also, when Ken Panton says that by enrolling 91 freshmen that is an increase of 200%, I can tell you that enrollment must have gone WAY down in the past 4 years because we regularly had freshman classes of 100+ when I was there (1995-2000). Another thing (that I have mentioned before!)...it's a long way until the first day of the fall semester. Those numbers will definitely change (and will usually drop) by August. Notice the wording: "Ninety-one freshman, an increase of 200 percent, have accepted offers of placement in the Honors College for 2004-2005, said dean Ken Panton." Many of those who accept offers at USM end up going somewhere else in the fall.
Absolutely, as an incoming freshman (during the last Ice Age, of course) I kept an acceptance from my state U's honors college in my back pocket as insurance, but ended up going to a private college up North. I feel like USM may be a lot of kids' back-pocket choice.
I have been interested in the Honors College over the years, largely because many of the Presidential Scholars have been music or theater majors. I was particularly pleased that these students (who realistically are getting a "trade" education in a skill--music or theatre) were also getting a broad-based education. Now I have been told that all this has changed. What is going on?

What I heard was that they did away with Colloquium (the flagship set of courses for General Honors students that counted for World Lit, World Civ, and Intro to Philosophy, at one point). I have no idea what they've replaced it with. When I've gone to look on the HC website, it contains the same information about HC that I wrote myself when I worked there over 4 years ago. I'm hoping that there will be updated information on there soon so that we can all get a look at what sort of new structure has been put in place.
For the love of Pete....LET IT GO!!!! We all know you are going to Vanderbilt...congratulations - blah, blah, blah - good luck on getting socialist tenure in the future. Look forward in life - because you were obviously wrong and lost your "big battle." That's OK - we have all fought the wrong fight - some won and some lost. As evidenced by the rumor-mongering and hard feelings on this board, there is a deep resentment for those with differing opinions, different tactics, and different beliefs. Take a deep breath - and realize that the current administration has the same goal as you - to make USM a better university - they just differ from you as to how to do it! It's OK to disagree - just don't be disagreeable....

Don't be fooled, guys...this isn't the real Mike Mader (we had this same poster on the FS board). Just someone who likes to pose as him.
And, for your information, I don't GO to Vanderbilt. I WORK there. And I'm still WORKING on my PhD at USM (2 classes to go!).
Yes - this is the "real" Mike Mader.....always has been and always will be...and not hiding behind some wall of anonimity - which, by the way, is obviously not necessary because "truth" is STILL being allowed to pursue her degree. Kind of blows a hole in the "don't speak out against Shelby for fear of retribution" argument, doesn't it? Unless you are actually breaking the law and/or policy, you won't get your a$$ in a sling.
As far as being "disagreeable" - two points. First, check the hate and vitriole being spewed across this website! You people need to spend more time thinking happy thoughts rather than depressing yourselves about your lost causes and battles. You were wrong. It's OK - we have all been wrong before and will be again.
Finally, it absolutely cracks me up that you people are upset about having your e-mail checked. You are working on government computers, in a government institution, and expect that the things you do on your (oops - our) computers won't be public domain???? Try getting a real job and working in the real world and see if the work you do on the computer your employer provides for you is not tracked.
BTW - a great American passed tonite - say a prayer for he and his family, and give thanks for the freedom he led America and the world to....

Gosh, this must be somebody doing great satire again. Reagan gaves us the freedom to have our e-mail monitored.

I'm baaaack. Reagan a great American? Well, as long as you are not a union member, a person who cares about the environment, a woman who believes in controlling her own reproductive process, a fiscal conservative who expects balanced budgets, a person who minds that high-tech weapons were illegally sold to Iran and illegal covert wars were fought in Central America to destabilize democratically-elected governments, or an average taxpayer who saw their taxes go up under Reagan, since he cut taxes for the rich and for corporations only and exploded the national deficit - sound familiar? Over the next few days the conservative Republican media will show its true colors and try to turn this man into an infallible saint (ironic since Reagn wasn't all that religious).
I am intrigued by Mr. Mader' s obvious dislike for Andrea (truth). No one here or anywhere that I know of has ever claimed that a student would not be allowed to finish a degree because of criticism of Dr. Thames' administration. In fact, students are the really invulnerable people. It's staff and faculty who fear retribution Mr. Mader's comments sound like he thinks USM is being magnanimous in "allowing" Andrea to complete a PhD. Excuse me? Degree completions are critically important to academic programs.
Also, from the writing style, I suspect that he is the same person who slammed me several times for wasting the taxpayers' money by spending my time on the board, and made negative comments about my management abilities. Profound, profound apologies if I'm wrong on this. Of course, I haven't worked at USM in some time, so the comments missed their mark.
But really, Mr. Mader, what is your purpose on this board? Are you seeking to change minds and hearts through reasoned discourse, or are you simply angry and ventilating?
Fellow posters, I wish we could find a different venue than the AAUP web site. I think it would be better to be a casual, voluntary group like we used to be.

I'm with you LVN!! MM - give it up. Attacking Andrea makes you appear to be silly and insipid. Your intent is throw a monkey wrench in the conversations that are occuring, alas, it won't work. Becoming personal only deflates any argument that you are attempting to make.

Your comments about me don't even merit being addressed as they are barely coherent, but if you are the *real* Mike Mader (which I highly doubt), where did you go to school in 8th grade? And, if you can answer that, who was the 8th grade science teacher at that school? If you can provide the correct answers to these questions, then I will certify your authenticity, MM. If not, then please take your ill-informed rantings elsewhere.

Well Truth, I guess you got me. I never got as far as the 8th grade for my formal education, but that's about to change. I plan to matriculate at USM pretty soon now that they have that open admissions policy and plenty of scholarship money. I been talking to that nice Dr. Doty over at the business department, and he says I can get over 120 credit hours just for my work experience. So I'll start out right away working on my Ph.D. in Economic Development. I really didn't mean to offend you with my comments. I was just trying to help us all get along, like one big happy family. I'll look forward to marching with you at commencement.
