RE: daily rumor mill #31 (CEP special)
Here's some of the letter (though it doesn't reflect the whole thing, which I suggest you read.
"As chair of the Department of Psychology at USM, I am actively involved in the recruitment of new faculty. I can honestly tell our job candidates that Southern Miss is a wonderful place to work - if one loves teaching, research, creativity and discovery. And most of the faculty members I know do love these things. Otherwise, they would not have chosen to be college professors and work as hard as they do to help create a better tomorrow for our children and our children's children."
This is basically a positive (and I think accurate) statement about the faculty of USM. Shelby should take some lessons from SK on what to say about the faculty.
Also the letter is dated February 9 (pre-the firings and no confidence votes.) He may not feel exactly the same way today.
SK's letter was written after all the deans were fired publicly, after the FAR misinformation from the administration, after there was an attempt to rewrite the Faculty Handbook to make it easier to fire tenured faculty, after the bizarre provost swap, after the enrollment fiasco, after the flawed drug and alcohol policy came out, after the selective raises which did not follow proper procedure, after he got a good raise, and after A. Dvorak threatened to sue any one who questioned her credentials.
Here is our next stop through these treacherous seas, paying passengers. It may be a mirage, but maybe not: Name: obijywhDate: Jun 23, 2004Views: 382 Quote | ReplyRE: RE: RE: daily rumor mill #31 (CEP special) quote: SK's letter was written after all the deans were fired publicly, after the FAR misinformation from the administration, after there was an attempt to rewrite the Faculty Handbook to make it easier to fire tenured faculty, after the bizarre provost swap, after the enrollment fiasco, after the flawed drug and alcohol policy came out, after the selective raises which did not follow proper procedure, after he got a good raise, and after A. Captain-I don't think you are our friend, although you claim to be. You are trying to divide us at a time when division benefits no one but SFT. Good try, troll. Go back to the Roundhouse and try again!

My interpretation is that the Captain is your friend. He's shown how things have gotten so bad than even departments that once handsomely rewarded, and people who were once positive toward the administration, are not immune to the storms. Note the title of this thread: As The Worm Turns.
If you don't consider it a clever form of support, then it (the letter) reflects someone who was not very observant or in tune to what was going on at USM at the time.

If the chair who wrote that letter was not very observant or in tune to what was going on at USM at the time, maybe he chose to ignore those happenings. How was his department treated in the interim?

If he chose to ignore those happenings, then he was an SFT collaborator (to use a thought on the board from yesterday).
Nah--that department hasn't been "handsomely" rewarded under SFT. So, Captain is a troll......
I thought the psychology faculty faired quite well salary wise, merit and/or stealth, after the controversial letter appeared. Is that true? I might be wrong but I seem to recall that a statement or statements confirming this was posted on this board by someone in their department. I don't recall the name of the poster or exactly what it said. Would you like for me to retrieve it? The worm has turned in the sense that psychology has not been treated as well recently. Is that true? The controversial letter stirred up lots of comments when it appeared. Like this one:

RE: RE: daily rumor mill #31 (CEP special)
I am seeing parallels between what is happening at USM now with middle/upper administration and the Vichy government in France during the occupation of France in WWII: The Deans, some Chairs, etc during the Thames administration are cooperating, playing both sides, and will be remembered infamously when Thames is gone. Some of the Vichy at USM are worse than others. Any body got hair clippers?
And SK's letter wasn't a positive endorsement of SFT (I just re-read it). Calling SK a worm is pretty slimey, and slime originates from the Roundhouse.
It seems to have been removed from the archives. You must have a hard copy, Ahab.
