Chaze handles majority of lawsuits against USM

When Hattiesburg lawyer Kim Chaze took on the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985 for the first time, he was on unfamiliar ground.
“Kim didn’t know a lot about the university system at the beginning, but before our case was over I think he knew more about the university than university officials did,” said Linda Donnell, a USM employee who claimed she was wrongfully terminated from Southern Miss.
Chaze won that legal battle and has represented at least 50 faculty, students and staff in lawsuits or complaints filed against Southern Miss.
According to Forrest County Circuit court records, Chaze represents 14 of 21 plaintiffs with actions outstanding against the university dating to 1997. Information on five other lawsuits filed during that time period were not available. There were a total of 36 lawsuits filed against the university in the last five years in either circuit or U.S. District Court and 10 have been settled.
There are 11 lawsuits pending from years prior to 1997.
A review of the 21 court files that are available shows that Chaze handles the majority of lawsuits against the school.
“I’ve always believed that people should be treated fairly and I know this sounds corny, but I don’t think large institutions should be allowed to trample on the rights of people,” Chaze said.

The Hattiesburg American online...in their PM Update section (which usually means there's a longer article to come).

If there's a longer article to come, look for it tomorrow. The HA published a morning edition today due to the Memorial Day holiday, with no Chaze story in the print edition that was delivered to my house.

Has webster joined the AAUP-USM board? Kim Chaze looks like a good candidate for the glossary, or at least he will be soon. (Or is he there already?)

I've excerpted this for the board. Anyone know anything about either of these cases which would be relevant for the cause? (This is not just for gossip's sake, in other words.) Shelby Timms must be Thames, given that his attorney is Lee Gore.

The Ann Jordan case has been on the books for at least 10 years.  She ran a grant for USM many years ago.

Is there supposed to be an article about him in today's HA??  Interesting.

Of course, it could be HA's general ineptitude.

I'm not positive about this, but I think it was something the HA was going to run a week or so back, pulled it back for some reason, and will run it tomorrow. Timing is everything. Then again, this could just be more speculation. When I talk to my friend who has many conversations with Chaze, she appears very cryptic about it.

i don't know when the Whiting trial is scheduled to begin in federal court, but he may be concerned about an article in the HA shortly before he begins jury selection.  (assuming it is a jury trial)  i do know this, he doesn't take on new clients.  in fact, he doesn't live in hattiesburg anymore.  he's wrapping up old cases.
