...I recently experienced a tire blow-out on a remote, rural Mississippi road....
...I will always be indebted to you, University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames and USM Athletic Director Richard Giannini, for your willingness to stop, give up your valuable time and get me on the road again....
It wouldn't surprise me if Suzanne is 6'9" tall and was bouncing a basketball on the pavement beside her car when those gracious gentlemen stopped to help change her tire.
a remote, rural Mississippi road. After being stranded for quite a while with no way to call for help - so remote that there was no cell-phone signal . . .
That sounds like something out of a Grisham novel. What an odd place for those 2 characters to be.

I'll take a wild guess. They were en route to campus following their regular weekly visit to one of Forrest County's little backwoods bordellos. Just a couple of red-blooded Amurcan males doing a little, uhh, bonding.

Huh? I didn't know I had a major-domo? I do have a list of things you could do for me.

I'm hurt. Have you forgotten that you volunteered my services to Mlle. de Guerre?I've been busy reorganizing her carriage house, an unpleasant chore on par with Hercules cleaning the stables of Augeas. Keep your list. My back is killing me and I'm contemplating an early retirement.

How many college professors would have done the same? Probably not many.Thank goodness for Dr.T and Mr. G
With his heart? Maybe not a smart thing to do, dearie. Did anybody ask what the good gentlemen were doing out roaming the back roads? Of course, that could possibly be none of our beeswax.

Why were those boys meandering through the hinterlands? I think that was answered in an earlier post. Think "Chicken Ranch," and I'm not talking about Sanderson Farms. It's sweet of you to worry about Shelboo meeting the same fate as Nelson Rockefeller. You've gotta admit it would be a heckuva way for him to go, with his little elevator boots on.

Did anyone ever determine whether the HA letter was a spoof? Little Old Lady raises a good point concerning Shelboo's heart condition. I doubt he's even physically capable of changing a tire. I guess Giannini could have pulled it off. Or Angie D, with one hand tied behind her back.
The letter was real, even though the situation was surreal.
I thought about a couple of things -- for one thing, it's not safe for a woman alone to stop out in the hinterlands like that. Better to ruin the tire. Also made me think I need a can of that quickie flat fixer stuff in my trunk. It's really not safe to stop for people either, though I did stop one night on Hwy 11 for a woman who was off the road. But it was heavily travelled that time of evening. Generally I would not stop, but I would drive on to the nearest place and call the sheriff or HP.

Shelby' is a man .He'd take it to the liberal arts girlie men.
Someone does something nice and another person takes the time to thank them publicly for it and all most of you can do is belittle it. I would not expect most who post on this site to give any kind word or thanks to Thames but to go out of your way to detract from a good deed (when you could just be quite) is really sorry.
To someone looking from the outside in comparing your actions/words here with those spoke of Thames in the paper, it is no wonder many of you come across as a bunch of whining elitist who think that their opinions are the only ones that count because they have the letters PhD behind their name. If you got a bone to pick with Thames, pick the bone but do not go around putting down everything he might say or do just because you feel you must be on the opposite side from him. It only makes you look foolish and that perhaps Thames is not the gnome you try to make him out to be.

Hey, don't be to quick to paint us all with that brush. Son of Arnold already complimented Shelby on being a man, and went on to say that "He'd take it to the liberal arts girlie men." If that isn't high praise, I don't know what you'd call it.

I did not say "all." I qualifed my statements with "most" and "many" not "all" and "everyone", and this in reference to those who have posted under this thread. However, it only takes a few to make the whole of the group look bad. My apologizes if my statements gave offense to anyone who had not belittled the good deed done.

I agree Coast Resident. I must congratulate you for not using the word "liberal" when mentioning the whining, elitist faculty.
Is there a reason for the giant dark text? Or even for the really big text one or more other posters have been using lately (not counting the sports threads)?
