We were informed that the President's Council has been moved forward to meet tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7 AM, in Union H (instead of Wednesday). I believe this is open to the university community.
I was also told that the time of the COAL college meeting on Wednesday was changed to accomodate the AAUP meeting a bit better (there was overlap). Thank you Dr. Pood!
I also believe that there is a Graduate Council Meeting today at which Provost Grimes will be available to discuss the graduate assistant re-allocation plan. A report would be nice from an attendee.
Amy Young wrote: Why was PUC (sorry, it just makes sense to me) moved? Given the incredibly bad email situation we have been experiencing, this is troubling. Amy Young Just a guess, Amy, but maybe so the press will not get the message of the change. Getting there for 7 am isn't easy when you find out this late.
Constant strife at Mississippi Southern continues as the AAUP message board looks for an ulterior motive behind a change of schedule for the PUC meeting. It must have been moved to throw the press off the trail! As if anything important ever gets discussed at the PUC meetings or even gets announced at the PUC meetings. Whatever.
Reports???? wrote: Anybody have something to report from the PC meeting and the Graduate Council meeting? I believe the AAUP meeting is still underway. I thought the AAUP meeting was on Wednesday.
You are correct. The AAUP meeting is on Wednesday, Mrch 7 @ 3:30pm in OMH 109.
Anybody have something to report from the PC meeting and the Graduate Council meeting? I believe the AAUP meeting is still underway.
I wasn't at the PC meeting, but I was told it was a bit unpleasant. Here is a second hand report culled from multiple sources. Dr. Tammy Greer presented a report on the comparative effectiveness of the various departments in CoEP on about a dozen relevant dimensions. As she and Joe Olmi and Stan pointed out, line by line, there were no data to support pulling all replacement hires for psychology, while showering riches upon CISE and ELR. In fact, Child and Family studies also looked pretty good and deserving.
Drs. S. Thames and Grimes fessed up that the reason that psychology was singled out for the treatment was that psychology was able to go to a 2/2 for research active faculty this Fall for the first time ever (3/3 for less-research active faculty). Joe and Tammy and Stan pointed out all the reasons for this move, which was done with the knowledge and approval of the Dean and Provost to begin with! (For example, that 2/2 is typical, if not on the high end, for psychology programs with doc degrees in research extensives, that we lose faculty after a couple of years to other places because of the lack of flexibility to manage the department, that departments across COST have a similar load, that this is an efficient use of limited room room space, and so on, and so on). They also pointed out that the SCH/FT ratio for psychology was still the highest by far in the college (ELR lowest), that pubs rates were the highest (CISE lowest), use of part-timers in classes with >25 was the highest (CISE lowest), overall SCHs not much impacted for Psychology, and other interesting factoids.
Rather than thanking psychology for being good university citizens and managing their resources wisely, SFT responded with a couple of wise cracks. He cracked that if additional hires were provided, psychology would just go to a 2/1. In actuality, psychology needs replacements to provide additional sections that are demanded and to cover graduate courses that need to be taught for our APA accreditation. He also cracked publicly that Dr. Olmi asked permission to consult in the community on occasion (which Shelby implied he granted as an act generosity), which indicated to him that Joe just isn't working hard enough (I thought this shot was below the belt). SFT also lead the audience to believe that this was the Dean's plan solely. The Dean in other meetings has assured us that his recommendations were overridden and changed by SFT and Jay. Just another day at USM.
Shelby got a bit heated, by report, when Dr. Greer pointed out that there might be a perception of favoritism by granting his daughter (the chair of CISE) so many hires, including a whole bunch of new hires, based on the data here. Dr. Greer noted that she was just trying to help SFT stay out of any situation where there could be even an appearance of favoritism, but SFT didn't take that explanation very well. The exchange ended shortly thereafter.
Reports have come through that the chairs of ELR and CISE are not happy campers with the goings on today (hi Ron and Dana!). Apparently, they believe that Dr. Greer "got personal."
Keep in mind that this is second hand information, so feel free to correct me if I misstated this, or add information as necessary.
First of all, anyone that would set a meeting at 7:00 AM is an idiot. Why in the h--- was the meeting time for this meeting set at that time? Who set the meeting time? And, who yielded to it? Just think if you had to come from the coast for the meeting?
Seems like SFT's mode of operation is the same. It will never change. It's his way or the highway. He must put you down if you disagree one iota. I am surprised that anyone still has b---s enouth to question the King.
The PC should walk out on the guy. No one should go to any meeting this guy calls between now and May 2007. Put the Freeze on him. Strike Shelby's meetings and make "strike" his administration.
Dearies, it sounds to me as if the little old gentleman is losing it. It's hard to say from here at the Home for Retired Disagreeable Old Broads, but it sounds as if he's more out to lunch than usual.
As for Darlin' Dana complaining that it was "personal" well, when Daddy's your boss it can't be anything but personal. What does she expect?
You know, Mitch, COST lets undergrads teach intro biology labs. In fact, they don't even have to be biology majors! Any good undergrads in that department?
yeah--i've heard about the biology labs. the latest issue of the undergraduate research journal, catalyst, advertises that one of the authors taught/teaches a biology lab. not good when it comes to SACS.
Mitch, was the press in attendance? The date of the meeting was changed and someone here questioned if the media would be able to make the new meeting.
