I was just told that there are 5 or 6 faculty in the eco department that are sitting on job offers right now. 1 of these could be the one who resigned last week. The offers span all 3 academic ranks over there.
We've been hearing that Doty wants Econ out of the CoB. At schools where Econ is not in the CoB, it's in the CoAL. Probably just a rumor, but Econ wouldn't end up in science, education, or health.
Given the decision wheels already in motion, the department that will emerge next year will not be near as good as the one that started the academic year. That's a best case scenario. I wouldn't want to preside over this.
From what I've seen today, Doty will have a difficult time moving to another university business school with any sizable Asian contingent. Of course, I am assuming most, if not all, of those departing USM don't have a high opinion of him. That's probably a safe assumption. You can bet they are networking heavily about the guy.
Economics had an opening this year due to the December departure of Ty Black. Several candidates were interviewed. Now it looks like they may all have to be hired. You can bet none of them knows that there will be no GA support for them. I bet none knows that all of these people are leaving either.
Dr. Lo received offers from other places, including one of the 20 best Liberal Arts institutions in the country and a National University in the top quarter of Tier II (actually in the Top 75 of all National Universities).
She was still receiving offers as of yesterday when she got one from a school at the top of Tier III.
Dr. Thames does not need those sort of ingrates over in business. He has the "real" economics experts in Economic Development and IDV programs. That is why our honorable Trent Lott lent his name to this fine structure. Southern Miss will then lead the state in a "new" direction. Who needs the flim flam of that SBDC anyway? Tell me. We are going toward a profit center approach that will be the envy of the world.
Those whining liberal business professors, who are so inept, are getting their just due from Doty, SFT and Grimes. All they do is whine, complain, and run off to other schools. Grimes wants teh riff raff gone, and taking away resources and leaving Doty in charge is slimming down that added expense they incur. If these cry babies wanna run off to la la land, let them. Business profs need to shut and do their job helping our local businesses and quit acting like they actually are real reasearchers. They never were.
I must add what we on the other side hold dear: SMTT !
I am not a troll. This is a majority view here in Hattiesburg.
"The University of Southern Mississippi has lost its Small Business Development Center, a federally funded center that was designed to provide counseling and other services to small business owners and operators in South Mississippi.
The University had been warned that it was not following the direction for services set out when the center was awarded to Southern Miss."
Dear Thamesbeliever, It is really great to see how much good SFT and crowd are doing for the business community.
I don't know if you've heard this but I was told Doty is planning to use two of the vacant economist lines to fund graduate assistantships in the college. He has the support of a chair on this. Be on the defensive.
as to graduate money, he should not be able to misuse money that way. Dr. Thames and Dr. Grimes know what they are doing, and doing it for a good reason.
I have read this board for six months now, and I can see how pathetic the liberal professors are at Southern Miss. The money is being used for areas in science and yes, even arts, where it will yield a higher return.
Business profs should shut up, teach their classes, and do some good for their community, like Dr Malone is trying to do.

Ken, how do you find the time to read this board and post, given the many hats you wear for USM ? By the way, what good are you doing for your community? Enlighten us, please.
im not ken, u'd be surprised who I am and what I do.
There is a groundswell in Hattiesburg to rid our university of the riff raff, and I really believe Thames will accomplish this. The business folks just need to accept their "new place" at the table, and focus on going after our primary competitors to get more students. U can't do that writing a bunch of silly "research" papers no one reads, and for which the university gets no money or profits.

Yes!! Let's stop the ridiculous pursuit of knowledge at once!!! (sarcasm alert)

Don't worry, thamesbeliever, you folks have gone a long way towards achieving this goal. You've done such a good job that half the faculty who were here two years ago are gone, and the rest who aren't tied by family or PERS are looking or leaving. The riffraff is more than happy to bid you adieu.
For what it's worth, I think thamesbeliever is satirical and is having us on.
This just in. One in eco has an "open ended" offer that will go unfilled if he doesn't take it. That could take some time. There are two in finance with tentative offers now. Others in eco, and one in MIS may be announcing soon.
