A recent thread provides information about a faculty in economics who is moving on from USM. What is not reported there is that when she went to the CoB Dean's office complex to submit some paperwork the day she accepted the job, Dean Doty said "Shame on you.." to her.
This is simply reprehensible, and indicative of the kind of behavior Doty exhibits regularly. This is also what CoB posters have been trying to describe for everyone on this board. I guess it took the man himself (DHD) to do it for us in a way everyone can understand. It's really pathetic if you stop and think about it.
That's exactly what he said to her. This is a young female faculty living thousands of miles from her home country who's trying to make the best decisions she can for her life and career and the doughboy steps out of his office and says "Shame on you, ___" when she stops by to leave some papers with staff in his office.
maybe you couldnt understand what she said or she misunderstood him. i have heard you have to listen carefully to her sometimes.
No, he said it. Everyone knows about it. Thanks for your comment. The AAUP board will now get to see firsthand what the crew that lives around Doty will do to protect their "bird nests on the ground." Of course, that includes Doty himself since he made the remark to her.
I knew Doty and his followers were low class but to question her ability to understand what he said is a moral septic tank move. He's a juvenile jerk and many in the CoB know just how inappropriate his comments can be. Of course his two or three followers dismiss these comments as a part of his sense of humor but there's nothing funny about making inappropriate comments to a colleague regardless of gender.
His only comment should have been "We're sorry to see you go. Best of luck."
He was joking. Can't you see the joke? He has been trying to leave also. Any shame on her would be shame on him. Get it? Is there no humor in CoB? This Joker gets it and appreciates the joke he made on everybody.
The faculty member in question is very upset about the bad scene that Doty made in his office the other day, as are many others. The CoB is going to have to sink much further, it appears, before things can get any better.
By the way, you didn't mention that the comment was made in a public place. Not only did he make an inappropriate comment to her, he did it where other faculty and staff could have heard it. It's not enough to make the comment. He had to do it so that others could see his "sense of humor" at work.
Other people (maybe me another time?) have said it -- none of these deans are getting out of here as deans. They need to go to a better school as a prof, and start over (or not.) Sad but true.
Regardless of the college or the university, an administrator at the level of dean should exhibit professional behavior at all times. Anger is neither an appropriate or useful tool when one is responsible for leading an organization (or part of an organization). In these situations, one should follow Thumper's rule. "If you cannot say any thing nice, then shut the %*#*% up."

Cossack, while I agree with everything you say, this case goes well beyond even that. Doty is the father of daughters, any one of which may one day be on the receiving end of the same treatment. I wonder how he would feel about that.
