Mr. Morgan was selected the other day when it was decided that Dr. Shadad would be needed to fill a different position in the near future. He came highly recommended by some in the business college and in the business community. He is "Interim" as well.
I have a question. Is this the same Joe Morgan who had a Hall of Fame career as a shortstop with the Cincinnati Reds back in the 70's? I know Thames is a jock sniffer, but why in the world would he hire a former major league baseball player as CFO? Or, did Joe attend college after his retirement and study business, or accounting, or economic development?

He's the same guy....he pumps his elbow several times before signing each purchase order.

Thanks Rod. I remember him now. He was one of the first PhD's minted by USM's wurl' famous Economic Development graduate program. I think Dr.Dr. Dvorak even waived all the course and dissertation requirements so's he could complete his degree in 72 hours. Joe was a classmate of Lassen, who reportedly put in a good word for him.
This Joe Morgan has nothing to do with baseball! Joe is a great pick...a native H'burger whose dad was a USM Business prof back in the good old days. Joe is a straight-shooter and a good guy. I hope that he can steer clear of the Thames-taint enough to keep his job after May 2007. If anyone can do this, he can.

Truth/Andrea
thanks andrea, I also remember his dad. He was a true professional and if apples do not fall far from the tree we have a good guy as interim CFO,
Maybe Shelby's talent is choosing persons for interim positions. Pat Joachim on the Gulf Coast is a good example. She is doing an excellent job under the most extraordinary circumstances that ANY administrator at USM has ever had to face.
JJoe Morgan is one of the few people left in the support side of the University who has experience and is very competent. He will do fine as the CFO. Unfortunately, we have lost many good people from that side of the university just as we have on the academic side. The downside of his appointment is that he will have to do both jobs neither of which is easy
Does this mean that the entire Morgan family (and spouses) will now have employment at USM? I have heard a colleague say that the Morgan family are some of the few "tenured" staff members on campus.

What's your point here, Moneymaker?
Truth
PS--And just for the record, no, not all Morgan family members work at USM.
My point is that while he may be a competent person and a nice guy, the individual in question has played the nepotism game along with some of this board's most hated administrators.

Just a little truth in advertising.
Again, without details to back up your assertion, I fail to see your point here. Was Joe Morgan hired by his dad? No. Did he ever report to his dad? No. Unless you bring some concrete facts to the table (instead of innuendos), I fail to see why anything you say is of much value in this discussion.
You're showing your ignorance here. There are at least four other Morgan family members who currently work or have worked at USM in the past year. Three of them have been affiliated with the COB. I will not publish their names, but those who pay attention at USM know who they are.
It's strange how "nepotism" only applies to certain families. I'm not saying Morgan is a bad guy. What I'm saying is that nepotism is nepotism.
I agree. Making a university a "family thing" ends up badly. Regardless of how good or bad an individual may be, hiring family members is a poor move. The CoB does have/has had several representatives of the Morgan family on payroll.
1. The former CFO had no real training in accounting.
2. Anyone that watched his utterly pathetic "monopoly money" presentation really had to fear for the financial life of the university. Either the fellow was really that much of an idiot and/or he had no itegrity whatsoever.
3. Mr. Morgan is an accountant.
4. Maybe Mr. Morgan has more integrity than the former CFO.
5. Conclusion, for now I'll take my chances with Mr. Morgan.
People complaining about nepotism are out of touch with the employment realities of this area. Try Forrest General or Hattiesburg Clinic. Hiring relatives is the way it's done. It's just that most people honor the rule about not being the relative's supervisor.

Precisely. Most of the complainers are "foreigners" who have seen civil services where nepotism and cronyism are not the norm. This isn't the worst civil service environment I've ever seen (spent a year in Chicago), but it's not good. I've been here 25 years and maybe it's just my imagination but things seemed to start improving in state government about 1985 and started backpedaling about 2000.
The two places I mentioned aren't civil service (they're just the next biggest employers and I know a lot of related people who work there.) It's the norm everywhere, private and public.
One problem with Hattiesburg is that there are not many large employers where professionals can find work. Once you move beyond USM and the hospitals, there is just not that much around. Therefore, if you are an educated family and want to stay in Hattiesburg, there is a good probability that you might end up working at the same place.

God forbid that somebody should ever have to leave Hattiesburg. I know people that would turn down a 50% raise in pay at the Coast just to stay in Hattiesburg. That's got to be some sort of mental illness.

Why should a person that wants to live in the same town as family and friends be called mentally ill? Because you don't like Hattiesburg? Because you moved away from where you grew up and therefore everyone should do the same? There is more to life than money and good social support goes a long ways.
The little things start to add up, like having an old friend that will lend you his truck, being able to drop the kids off at the grandparents, that old HS friend who is now a lawyer that will give you free legal advice, personally knowing the guy that can get a pot-hole in front of your house fixed...little things that when you put them all together help you realize that you enjoy life as it is and why would you want to move away to a town where you have no connection and few if any friends, just so you can make more money. Different people have different priorities. But just because a person does not share your priorities, does not make them mentally ill.
