Does anyone happen to know the percentage of service courses (e.g. basic introductory courses or sophomore-level courses that are part of the core curriculum) that are taught by graduate students or adjuncts at USM? My own university will be coming up for reaaccreditation before long, and we have been advised that a percentage higher than about one third is excessive. We agree, of course, that it would be ideal to have full-time faculty teaching as many service courses as possible, but, as is true of many universities, it is often difficult to find the funds to hire the necessary supply of full-time faculty.
I am just trying to get a sense here of the percentage of such courses typically taught by graduate students and adjuncts at other universities. I'd therefore appreciate comments from people at other schools who may also read this board.
I should clarify something: we have been told that it is considered excessive (supposedly) if more than one-third of ALL courses offered by a department are taught by TAs or adjuncts. (I did not mean to imply that the one-third figure applied ONLY to "service" [or core curriculum] courses.)
