McCain would have whipped everybody into line and there woudl not have been any question of authority. He did not yield to whiners and nathsayers.

I would follow Invictus or LVN. Wait, I'd follow Noel Polk too, Anne Wallace, Stephen Judd, Frank Glamser, Gary Stringer, Don Cotten, and the deceased Jesse Palmer.

I'd refuse to follow any squatty bodies (Thames family members especially) and anyone who could claim their MISguided fame to the Thames clan.

I'd like Night Chalker to be Prez of the Faculty Senate and SeeMore to be in charge of all technology (as well as receiving a huge journalistic prize for what SeeMore does best).

And the FireShelby founder should win the multimillion dollar PowerBall on Wed. and, with (or without) that windfall, continue into academic greatness.

Be realistic....look at we have had in the past. Evauate our past leaders and then put forward who we need for the future.

I will take Don Cotten.

I am being realistic.  I am not about to start thinking that those in the IHL and the Barbouresques have the best interests of what was the once and future past of USM.  I am Once again, everyone I stated ought to be considered. I am a Cotten picking person. I'll take Cotten over polymeristics any day.

Invictus, not to mention Dr. Cotten, is actually qualified. I, on the other hand, can't get two cats to do what I say. Wouldn't it be cool to have some Dylan song as the processional at graduation?

Glamser should be the new dean of Arts and Letters.
Stringer should be the new Vice President for Research.
Hollandsworth should be the new Provost.
LVN should be the new PR officer.
Invictus or Judd should be the new president.
Cotten should be the new IHL commissioner.

I can just be the lady who helps faculty line up for processions, make sure their hats are on straight and all. That would satisfy my bossiness and give me a chance to wear my expensive and little worn hood.
(I actually got recruited to do that at a presidential inauguration somewhere else. It was a hoot. I did learn that if you went to Oxford your robes are trimmed with white fur.)

<RITUAL INVOCATION OF FAIR USE>
Oh, the benches were stained with tears and perspiration,
The birdies were flying from tree to tree.
There was little to say, there was no conversation
As I stepped to the stage to pick up my degree.
And the locusts sang off in the distance,
Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody.
Oh, the locusts sang off in the distance,
Yeah, the locusts sang and they were singing for me.

I glanced into the chamber where the judges were talking,
Darkness was everywhere, it smelled like a tomb.
I was ready to leave, I was already walkin',
But the next time I looked there was light in the room.
And the locusts sang, yeah, it give me a chill,
Oh, the locusts sang such a sweet melody.
Oh, the locusts sang their high whining trill,
Yeah, the locusts sang and they were singing for me.

Outside of the gates the trucks were unloadin',
The weather was hot, a-nearly 90 degrees.
The man standin' next to me, his head was exploding,
Well, I was prayin' the pieces wouldn't fall on me.
Yeah, the locusts sang off in the distance,
Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody.
Oh, the locusts sang off in the distance,
And the locusts sang and they were singing for me.

I put down my robe, picked up my diploma,
Took hold of my sweetheart and away we did drive,
Straight for the hills, the black hills of Dakota,
Sure was glad to get out of there alive.
And the locusts sang, well, it give me a chill,
Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody.
And the locusts sang with a high whinin' trill,
Yeah, the locusts sang and they was singing for me,
Singing for me, well, singing for me.

AMEN! Preach on, brothers and sisters!

And I'll be back when the right guys are leading the charge.

McCain fought for USM and he had the power to win some battles.  Fleming fought for USM against a power base where he had very little support because he was new.  I like the guts of people who stand up.  Both these guys stood up for USM.  Nobody would question McCain; he did what he wanted.  Fleming took on the tiger and it ate him because everybody stood outside the arena and let it happen.  History--when everything comes out--will record that we missed our chance when we let Giannin and his crew of ne'er-do-wells oust Fleming.

Very few stood up. Very few spoke up. Very few put up. Most of them shut up. So look at us now.

And those who did were ridiculed and punished.  They fought the good fight with no support from their colleagues.  I suppose we get what we deserve.

All of that occurred when there was no AAUP chapter at USM.
