It's interesting that Eagle Talkers continuously gripe about how awful their play-by-play announcer John Cox is.  There is a long thread about him tonight, where one fan states that the idea that JC stinks is perhaps the only thing all Eagle fans agree on.  If you've ever heard the broadcast, as I did tonight, it is terrible.

What's interesting about it is that JC continues to be employed as the play-by-play guy despite the anger they feel about him.  He would easily be fired by Florida, LSU, Texas, USC, Ohio State, Clemson etc. after just a single broadcast like he delivers night-after-night to Golden Eagle fans.  Not only does he continue on, he writes books on the history of USM football (Rock Solid) and the history of USM basketball (currently working on).

Eagle fans are just as powerless about what happens with their own sports programs (what can you say, they give no money to them) as the alumni are about the state of the academic side of their school (MSU Bulldogs Klumb and Nicholson see to that).

And you are doing exactly what to see to the betterment of the program other than point this conversation on a message board out?

Just curious-

It's not our job to better the athletic programs here at USM. It's (generally) our job to better the academic programs at USM. You know, the whole reason there's a university is for education, not for athletics. USM can survive without an athletics department, but the athletics department cannot survive without the academic side of USM to support it.

And if it burns you up so bad to work at an institution that does have a desire to suceed on the playing field, you can also well move on to another institution that does not compete in intercollegiate athletics.  Last I heard, there are many fine universities, with astute and reputable research and teaching faculty and staff, that pay much more than poor ole USM.  Hit it. Good luck.

Otherwise, please realize that you are not a part of a solution.  And I don't mean that you aren't great in your chosen discipline or wonderful for graduate and undergraduate students, but just shouldn't be at USM.
