OK, that's not really the headline, but here's the link. I wonder how much one of SFT's anti-DuPree candidates gets paid these days. I guess we may know if we ever see a budget string.
Yes . . . um . . . . do we know if she is being paid from state funds?
I don't know. Does it matter where the money is coming from (other than traceability)? I wonder if SFT would have hired JD had BR won the mayorship?
Well . . . only in the sense that we are in such budgetarily tight times that we are looking at outsourcing the physical plant, no one really expects any raises, and faculty hires have slowed to a crawl while the provost's office vets every single one with a fine tooth comb looking for an excuse not to hire.
So how is it that administrators keep getting raises and new administrative positions keep getting hired?
I'd like to see how much money these people hired to bring in moey actually bring in. It might make me feel a little better. But I doubt it. Seems to me an awful lot of people are being hired to do what some present administrators are supposed to be doing, but for some reason don't seem to find very exciting or satisfying.
Wish i could create new positions and hire people to do the parts of the job I don't like or don;t want to do.
We're agreeing here. My only thought is that by using private funds, the salary and expenses may be obscured from sight. Otherwise, it's a pretty usual waste of money. More pandering to business entities who want room at the trough.

Ah yes, I understand.
My thought was that while there might, in the public mind, be some case for paying her with private funds even under these financially depressed circumstances, I think the illogic of spendng clearly public funds to pay yet another administrator would be pretty clear.
But you are right -- in a public university . . . . these funds are pretty fungible.

Maybe. I don't know myself of any . . . . and in any case those positions have to be approved from above . . . It is possible that really large departments might need those positions. Our program is fairly small and our chair is swamped. I was swamped when I was director of theatre -- so much so that my teaching and production work pretty much ground to a halt.
I vaguely remember seeing a job posting in that Center a while back, and seem to recall that it was grant-funded. But I was surprized by this appointment for several reasons.

The LJD connection for one, and the fact that she doesnt' have a degree. She does have a lot of experience and connections in the community however. Was this job advertised?

Don't know -- this is the first time I have heard about it.
Besides all the obvious cronyism to help out a former similar-minded politico make money from the taxpayers, this appointment is also a problem because it duplicates agencies and government entities already in place. Why is this new "Business Assistance Center" needed or wanted when we have the ADP, the Downtown Association, the Rotary clubs, Urban Development Office, and the Mayor's Office? Who in the world requested it?
Very good questions, Angeline. Doubt we'll ever get answers. BTW, not everything in the known universe is tied to political party. Republicans are asking the same questions you are.

And, this comes on the heels of USM's closure of the small business development center (funded by the feds) on the coast. The reason cited with "to change the focus to large projects rather than small business." It appears the real reason was to remove the then director and replace the center with a group under the control of Ken Malone and crew.

Why change the focus to large projects? Arent 3/4 of all new jobs created by small business?
