If USM were to follow Cornell's track and make Dr. Ben Carmichael of Hattiesburg its next prez, that would be okay with me. Ben is a supporter of the faculty and a damn fine cardiologist, too.

He would not have the heart to do it.
A transplant at USM would be a good remedy.
There has been a lot of bleeding in major parts of our body.
It looks like we may need a pacemaker to revive this body.
A prescription for cleansing bad blood is also needed.

I can see that my warped sense of humor bite me in the butt.

What I was impressed about was that he said his first job is to listen, to faculty and students. Wouldn't that be a nice trend where you are???  Wouldn't it be nice to have a president of  your university who wanted to know what was going on, in the trenches?

I do realize that you are going to have your "whiners" who complain no matter how good it is going, but you also have honest and sincere concerns.  This isn't a matter of left vs right, liberal vs conserative, but a matter of what is necessary to fix the problem at USM for everyone's benefit.  Wouldn't it be nice if the next president cared.

I think a medical doctor would be a wonderful choice. They live in the real world ,unlike most academic types. They know how to play golf, another important feature of academic life. Plus they know the value of a dollar.

Just for grins, BC, would you mind defining "real world" as opposed to the "fake world" academics live in? Please omit references to control over one's time, as we have established on this board that many other professions and occupations have similar control. You might, for example, address differences in such activities as rearing children, paying taxes and bills, mowing the lawn, auto repairs, cooking dinner and other such activities.
Interested in what you'll have to say.

Skorton's move to Cornell is a big loss for Iowa. He has been an active supporter, not only of medicine and the sciences, but of the arts and humanities (and not just by playing the saxophone). This year he declared it the "year of public engagement." The man understands what a comprehensive research university is. He also is capable of uttering the phrase "shared governance" on a regular basis.
