Trent or Not?

On 1-17 Trent Boy is supposed to announce his intentions.

If he says he is not going back to the Senate, DO WE WANT HIM TO FOLLOW SFT AS PREZ?

We could do worse. Think of all the contacts he has.

Spoken like a true good ol' boy. That's been one of the problems at USM for several generations.

If Lott had a really good provost and deans he listened to on academic matters, he could be effective. In view of the current reality, he'd be a disaster.

Why in the world would Senator Lott want to be President of USM? If he had some burning desire to be president of a university, he could easily go elsewhere. However, I agree that with a good provost etc he could be effective, because the President's job is to raise money and be a public face for the University. He could do that well, but again, why would he want to?

LVN, It's probably for reasons similar to those of other national politicians became college or university presidents. Remember Dwight Eisenhower? There are many other politicians turned college presidents. It's sort of a tradition.

I wasn't asking why he'd want to be a university president, I was asking why he would want to be president of USM, specifically. He would probably have other choices.

And there would be plenty of time for golf. And he could easily commute to work from the coast. And he would see the edifice named in his honor everytime he strolled over to the East side of campus.

Unfortunately, and unfairly, his choices are probably a great deal more limited now than before his infamous speech in South Carolina.

Maybe he'll be the successor to Judge Cooley.

Why would USM want Trent Lott as president?  He has no experience as a college administrator to my knowledge (see SFT).  He is an OLE MISS alum.  I'm sure the IHL would love it.  He would oversee the finishing off of USM.

If Trent Lott wants to become a university president, he will want to go to Ole Miss.

By the way, David Boren has been a terrific president of the University of Oklahoma. Of course, he was a Rhodes Scholar and an excellent writer.

Our dear Senator says that he will seek reelection. That takes him out of consideration for president of USM and MSU. Unless, some good democrat beats him in November.

Could Mabus, Musgrove, or Moore do it? Will any one of them have the courage to take on Trent and his backers?

I believe any of the above mentiioned democrats could beat Lott if voters looked at the issues. We need someone in the Senate that really wants to be there. Trent Lott is tired of it. Why else would he have wavered regarding his decision of whether to run or not? It certainly was not to keep any Republican from opposing him.

A fourth person that would be a good candidate is Gene Taylor. When you look at Taylor's record it has certainly been a better record than Lott's.

Betcha he sends you a Christmas card with a picture of his family on it each year. You and I must be on his "special" list.

At a recent "town meeting," Taylor said that he was not a Senator & didn't want to be a Senator. If I remember my politicianese, that's sort of like saying, "If Trent says he ain't running, I'll announce"...

Gene's kind of between a rock & a hard place. The Republicans hate him, because they can't seem to beat him, and the Democrats don't like him, because he tends to be pretty conservative. Doe that make him some sort of atavism to the days of liberal Republicans (can anyone say "Nelson Rockefeller?") & conservative Democrats?

All I know is that most of the Republicans in my family vote for Gene.
