There has been some discussion of USM athletics over the past few days.  A HA puff piece on Giannini also just came out.  For another perspective, below is a list of wins and losses for USM so far this academic year.  Included in the compilation is wins and losses in football, soccer and volleyball which have all completed their competition.  Also included are mens and womens basketball results, through yesterday (1/15/06).

Wins: Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Centenary (0.5), Central Florida (2), East Carolina, Florida A&M, Houston (0.5), Jackson State, Lamar, Louisiana Lafayette, Marshall (2), McNeese State, Mississippi State, Mississippi Valley State, Murray State (2), New Orleans, South Alabama (2), Southeastern Louisiana, Spring Hill, Tennessee State, Tulane (3), UAB, UTEP, West Florida, Western Illinois, William Carey

Losses: Alabama, Arkansas, Arkansas Little Rock, Auburn, Bradley, Centenary (0.5), Central Florida (3), Denver, East Carolina (4), Elon, Florida A&M, Houston (3.5), Indiana Ft. Wayne, Jacksonville State, Liberty, Louisiana Monroe, Marshall (2), McNeese State, Memphis (4), Mercer, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, North Florida, Northwestern State LA, Rice (3), Sam Houston State, Samford (2), San Diego State, South Alabama (2), Southern Utah, Tulane (2), Tulsa (2), UAB (3), UTEP (2)

Overall: 30-53-2

As you can see, the overall record is not good.  Examination of the wins paragraph reveals quite a few small schools.  And for each of these wins you can find similar schools in the losses paragraph.  There is not a lot of "there" there in the wins list.  Perhaps Thames should seek a move to Division II status.

A record like this warrants a $20,000 raise?

This is an eye-opener for me.

So, to synthesize, USM has 19 wins over teams that it 'should' beat, 10 wins over teams that 'could go either way', and 1 win over a team the 'should' beat USM.

Alternatively, USM has 20 losses to teams that it 'should' beat, 28 losses to teams that 'could go either way', and 5 losses to teams the 'should' beat USM.

And there are 2 ties.

Overall (Wins-Losses-Ties)

USM v. Patsies: 19-20-01
USM v. Peers: 10-28-01
USM v. Premium: 01-05-00

So, USM is even with the "fluff" of the schedule and taking it on the chin everywhere else.

I'd say that's money well spent. What do I know, though? I'm just a stupid Hattiesburg voter. Makes me want to pass a bond issue.

If you'll open the other eye, I think you'll see that USM women's sports have been hit the hardest - basketball, soccer, softball, and volleyball.

you're right, it's RG who let Lu Harris go.  From the WCWS to the woodshed in just 2 years.  The good ol boys on ET didn't want uppety women around the playing fields.

I personally have heard Gianinni talk about what a drain women's sports (the NCAA division I requirements) are on the athletic budget. It has been several years, so perhaps he has changed his mind, but back then, he said it.

This is the spin Mixon and the car dealers put together.  What a dud AD he is!  He got the extra dough to satisfy his internal greddy streak.  As for courage as a leader, he has none.  He is and has been throughout a Tiny Thames minion.

Birdman, check this out.  I kicked it up just for you.  It reveals a pretty pathetic picture if you ask me.

kicking up for the Birdman.  Enjoy.  I personally love the losses to IU-Ft. Wayne and Southern Utah, though the 2 to Samford are cute too.

Is RG is happy to have his women's teams not do well, it is a way for them to just stay under the radar and not make any waves. I have heard from a friend that the former Assistant softball coach who is now Associate HC at Georgia is going to be looking this year for a HC job after 10 years with LHC. I wonder how eager RG would be to turn the program around? I heard he had asked her back in 2000 but she felt she wasn't ready for a HC position but now with two children, she will be looking after the completion of this year.

You don't get it.  The raise is not for his performance as AD.  It is for his unflagging support of Tiny Thames.  Get it now?
