Cofer considers MSU opening

STARKVILLE - A leading prospect for Mississippi State University's presidency is generating talk on and off the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe....

...The Faculty Senate submitted names of about 20 prospects to Florida-based search consultant Jan Greenwood for consideration, Goodman said.

The IHL may try to keep the MSU presidential search secret within the Magnolia state, but this article suggests it will be appropriately open elsewhere.

Is this how the process is likely to work at USM, too?

It is very important that the USM Faculty Senate and AAUP chapter publicly push for campus visits by the finalists. Now is the time to join MSU in the request.

If this type of secrecy continues, we'll probably be buried in secrecy in other significant ways until there's a turnover in the composition of the IHL.

Tom Meredith said the MSU search will be a model for future searches... aka the USM search. If you don't like secretive searches, you'd better say something now.

The emphasis here should be on "publicly." The position of the Faculty Senate and the AAUP should not be kept a secret. Shout it to the rooftops!

This could be an indication of a movement toward a Mississippi higher education "system" with the IHL Commissioner functioning as the system Chancellor. If this happens, look for many more things to be decided centrally at the Board office.

What a strange way to conduct a search. I know nothing more about the search except what I read in the newspapers It wouldn't surprise me if the new president has already been picked behind closed doors.

I dare say the IHL won't treat Ole Miss like this when they begin their search for a new president.
