House panel OKs $1,000 raises for state employees

The House Appropriations Committee today quickly approved a bill to give $1,000 across-the-board pay raises to most state workers.

Teachers are excluded. They have received significant pay increases over the past five years.

There are about 31,000 state employees. The $1,000 raises would go to the roughly 27,100 people who've worked at least a year for state agencies, universities and community colleges, said Rep. Cecil Brown, D-Jackson....
