The ESPN website finally has a USM team ranked in the top 10! However, it is USM men's basketball -- and we are ranked in the bottom 10. The ESPN quote about our team is: 98 combined points in losses to Denver, Samford and Arkansas? Needing 4 OTs to beat UNO without McCalebb? Losing to a Southland school is a blip in comparison (especially this season).
I'll accept that. After tonight, ESPN's "gut feeling" may be more precise than Sagarin. I still feel badly for the kids. This kind of situation ain't fun.
The Bottom 10 is just some sports columnist trying to be funny. They once had a team's uniform on the list for being too ugly and have given honorable mentions to mascots in the past. However, usually the teams that make the list are there for sucking too much...
Sometimes, you see a team that is doing well make the list for one bad loss.
And to clarify one point, most sports journalists despise ESPN for perpetuating far too many cheesy sports cliches (which should die a slow painful death if us sports journalists had our way) among America's youth, and for turning sports fans into mindless morons who now quote SportsCenter in interviews (people saying they oculd only succeed b/c of their teammates, if your team scored 54 points in a game, and you scored 45 of them, clearly you could have had any 4 schlubs on the court with you and still won the game).
Sorry for the rant, I'm one of those sports journalists who wants to puke every time Stuart Scott says BOO-YAH!
