Former University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames leaves a long and complicated shadow on the institution he served for more than four decades. . . .
In the July 6, edition of the Hattiesburg American there was an article announcing the retirement former USM President Shelby Thames, and unfortunately the American staff writer Ed Kemp consumed most of the article with the criticism rather than the accomplishment of Dr. Thames. . . .
With the recent announcement of Shelby Thames' retirement and the not so positive publicity, I would like to extend a sincere message to Dr. Thames. You are and have been an extraordinary man, and I appreciate your dedication to the University of Southern Mississippi and the many students you have taught and mentored. I especially want to thank you for making a difference in my son's life. . . .
