Will play Arkansas State (6-5) out of the Sun Belt Conference.
Interesting scenario. B/c Ohio State go into the BCS, the Big 10 did not have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill its slot in the Motor City Bowl. The MCB wanted Memphis. That opened the door for USM to get New Orleans. Without OSU's good fortune, USM is sitting home.
The game is in Lafayette, LA.
Eagle Talkers are breathing a huge sigh of relief.....
The game will be on Tuesday December 20th, posing a problem for those (athletes, student managers/trainers, cheerleaders, and marching band) who will be out of town for the game.

If the band is required to invade a between semesters break in order to attend a football game, the athletes should be required to invade a between semesters break to attend a concert or a band festival. Maybe USM can assemble a little pep band instead of having the whole enchalada go to Lafayette for the bowl game during the break.

The bowl game will not be "in between semesters." It will be smack-dab in the middle of finals. By the way, if the game is on Tuesday the 20th, I am quite sure that the football team will be "required" to be in Lafayette by at least Saturday the 17th and will be "required" to stay until sometime on the 21st, meaning that they will miss 3-4 days of finals.
The worst bowl in the country -- representatives of a crummy mid level conference that only got into the bowl by luck. Whooo-hoooo-mercy! Rushing out to buy tickets even as we speak!

Why worry about finals? This is more than enough time for these students to take a whole semester course. Of course, they will all have to have laptops and links for "On-line minisession courses".

IMO, there are too many bowl games, resulting in marginal teams being rewarded with post-season appearances. The corporate sponsorships attached to some of the bowl names are a mouthful, although personally I did like the name "Poulan Weed Eater Independence Bowl."

Calling it the "Poulan Kudzu Kutter Bowl" would attract more national attention -- and more smiles from our Ole Miss friends as USM fans proudly boarded the bus.

I personally prefer the "Oscar Mayer 100% All-Beef Bologna Bowl."
According to the cbssportsline poll, USM is #71 and Arkansas State is #83. This should be a goodie. Is Arkansas State a university or a JUCO?
Sagarin has USM at #60 and Arkansas State at #121. Be careful about ridiculing anyone, though. Even in da bes' Laf'yette roux, dat crow taste nasty yeah.

Local talk radio was just having a discussion about the upcoming bowl season. They had a terrific time making fun of the USM/Ark State match. Not what the car salesmen would want to hear.
This is an embarassment. Why didn't we simply pass on this mediocre season. Then, again, the whole bowl set up is a joke! So I guess we can be part of the joke, along with Arkansas State (PLEASE!!!!).
