"At Southern Miss, Sims has contributed to the Circle of Champions and its Eagle Club. Southern Miss President Shelby Thames said Sims' solid relationship with the university spans decades."
I'll say this about the old HHS. You could build the finest arts center in the state for a fraction of what it will cost to renovate this building. I drove by it today. It sucks. Tear it down and build one that looks just like it and spend the savings on something important like a new addition to the football stadium.

"Tear ir down" and hurry. MSU is putting together a nice Fine Arts facility in downtown Meridian. They want to get on top of the arts in the state.

But in Meridian they are renovating the old Marks Rothenberg building. And, they are renovating space for living as well as class room.

My recollection from reports at the time is that Ray Sims sold the old school to the Downtown Association for a mere $50,000, but he had it appraised for much more than that. He may have even paid more than that for the property. I don't know.
Anyway, the value in excess of the $50,000 was to be taken as a tax deductible charitable contribution. In fact, the tranfer from Sims to the Downtown Association was delayed until the Association had qualified for preferable tax status so that Sims' "gift" would be qualified for favorable tax treatment.
On the other hand, when Elvis made charitable contributions, he never claimed them on his tax returns.
