I have heard many faculty say they are impressed with Shelby's handling of the Hurricane.  I know the business community is thrilled about it.  I have also noticed from this site that the faculty departure has fallen to near zero at this point.  Haven't seen a new one in weeks or months even (now that Nov. is upon us).  Looks like SFT may get more time, and support, after all.

President To Leave Early---Will devote remainder of career to the newly formed South Mississippi Paving and Bridge Building,Ltd....helping all of South Mississippi recover from Hurricane Katrina. " Based on my performance in awarding contracts to paving companies, having experience in turning things around and around and around, I think we can have a wurl class redevelopment to all of South Mississippi. I am too important to devote my energies just to USM," he said. "I have built bridges of a different kind, many which no one would cross, and I know I can bring about reconstruction, and line the pockets of those that need additional lining. A lot of money is going to flow and it needs to flow in the right direction."

Not what I've heard. I pick up that everyone is pretty much fed up and flat out tired--except for the few.

What did you expect, the newly hired to start leaving?  I would at least give them a couple of years and expect many will be gone before their third year review.  There aren’t many senior faculty able to leave anyway.  They need to stay to get their 25 years.

You are just trying to be provocative, right?  What did SFT do to "handle" the hurricane? He makes a simpy ad, he talks about lemonade.  SFT is still a big zero, and the college board knows it.  The business community is a non-starter.

I think President Thames and President Krebs have effectively "triangulated " the faculty. Most people in the community consider the faculty no longer relevant.

You have got to be kidding. Without staff and faculty there would be no university. If shelboo and the board keep this up that may well be the result. Seems to be what they have in mind with the Phoenix online model….no classes, video preserved faculty and a few tech folks, while the admin make big bucks and shaft the students.

Not only are they paying administrators at USM way too much, Shelby is paying his minions to write misinformation on this message board. Shows how powerful the message board actually is. You can spin all you want, but it won't change the truth. Shelby is a terrible president who has done almost irreparable damage to USM.

I have personally seen letters from two Gulf South schools (one in Mississippi, one in Louisiana) sent to their alumni asking for contributions to assist students who sustained losses during the hurricane. Those solicitations weren't asking for money to construct stadium skyboxes or to contruct buildings or even to fatten their endowment. The funds were to be earmarked for Students who experienced adversities during Katrina. I was very moved when I read those solicitation letters from the institutions' respective presidents. Has Southern Miss asked for alumni contributions designed to assist its students who experienced losses during the hurricane.

Well, son, this is total nonsense.  Triangulation has to do with determining the location of something, not reducing relevance.

All I know about President Krebs is that the camera is much kinder to him than the other one. He is a student and hence should probably be given more latitude than his co-star.

Most people in the community give no more thought to the USM faculty on a regular basis than they do to the medical staff at Wesley or Forrest General.

Lou: Mary, who was the greatest person in the 20th Century?

Mary: I don't know.  Winston Churchill?

Lou: Okay, let's say Winston Churchill.  And just how often does the average person think of Winston Churchill?

I assure you that Miss Information has not received any of the letters.

I think "discombobulate" would be a more accurate term than "triangulate."

SFT certainly has "turned things around". Before his presidency, USM was pointed in the right direction. We've done a 180 since.

Turned things around, as in, set your own house afire and then expect credit for finding a garden hose to put it out?

Triple word score for LVN! This would be worthy of Mr. Wonderful, if Mr. Wonderful were still around!

(I wish I had SFT's kind of luck, e.g., I botch an assignment at work & get a raise for fixing the damage I've done!)

The two preceding comments remind me of why I enjoy this board!

We're definitely still around. Just regrouping after the hurricane.
