USM was given 5 turnovers and had a double-digit lead only to lose by 4 in the end to a very bad NC State team today. ETers are now almost unanimously calling for Bower's head. One even pointed out that SFT told a gathering that if the team didn't finish 9-2 or better a change at the top would be made. The Eagles have now lost 3, so 8-3 is the best they can do. Turn out the lights, the party's over.

I heard the game on the radio. NC State has a heck of a running back. The Eagle's defense just pooped out in the fourth quarter, and broke, instead of bending. I haven't been a fan of Bower's offensive game for years, but the defense usually pays the bills. Bower sounded a bit irritated and frustrated on the post game show (I guess he knows what he is in for). He is a good coach, but I think that loyalty to the university and his program has kept him here way too long. He could easily go to a stronger program, and I am surprised that he didn't cash in several years ago. If he leaves under a cloud and due to pressures from some of the boosters, that would be a shame. But he'll land on his feet. Unfortunately, recruiting another head coach of Jeff's caliber will not be a walk in the park.
Eagle Talk is now in full meltdown mode. Fire Bower. They need 250 people to give $1,000 each to buy out Bower's contract. Hire Rick Neuheisel. Shelby said USM needed to be 9-2 this year or it would be trouble. SEC refs are the worst. No, C-USA refs are the worst. We're an elite team. Etc., etc., etc. One Eagle Talker actually has somewhat of a grip on the situation:
I'm not sure the days of Bower being able to easily get to a stronger program ever were. While I agree USM will be worse if they run him off, I think if they do the chances that he gets out of coaching altogether are about as good as those saying he stays in it. The only real offer he's ever had since USM was Wyoming. C-USA is as bad as ever right now, and he's got an average program in it. He'd likely end up as an assistant somewhere if he wanted to go up the food chain much.

Isn't it interesting that Sheby will try to fire two professors who did nothing wrong (with the full support of the football fanatics), but those same fanatics will hire anyone to win. I don't know about Neuheisel. He may be as pure as the driven snow, but .......

With all due respect, their RB had 40 yards for the whole season before he met us. We need a new coach. This is a hell of alot more important than most of the topics discussed on this board.

Please tell me you're not serious. There are universities which don't even have sports teams. When football is really more important than academic freedom, shared governance, the principles of sound teaching, or heck, even than hurricane preparedness we might as well turn out the lights and shut the doors. That library would make a nice sports bar, wouldn't it!

Actually it would make a hell of a great sports club - multiple levels, dance floors, bars everywhere, etc. You know, not everyone associated with our institution actually studied here or cares about your "academic freedom." They are probably doing what I am - checking in for comic relief.

You forgot to mention that it would be very private and well hidden from professors, students and the like. The other buildings would be vacant and the bushes and grass overgrown because the people responsible for paying for the library are very ticky-tacky about the library being used for "academic freedom" things, like research, and other students problems such as reading and writing assignments. But, since all of you grown people, who run our society, only care about sports games and not the students education perhaps it is time for you to get what you want - an empty stadium with all the frills and a sports bar with dance floors in the middle of nowhere. There are other places that a student can go for an education.

"Yeah", you, Mississippi and this nation will need to pay for this attitude for a long time. Mississippi is still paying for the sins of its past. This mess is being put on your tab of future payment. Do you want to be the problem or the solution?
Where did you get the opinion that it is "our academic freedom"? It is your freedom and our freedom to search for truth. It is what opposes the Enrons etc. in our society.
Watching the UAB/USM game on TV after having gone to a major football power game that afternoon, I was struck by the following: how "pitiful" those folks who want to pretend that USM is in the big time. (And I say this as someone as an alum who loves USM and who values and enjoys sports.) I wish those folks who want to pull the strings believed in USM for its strengths--in english, the arts, polymer science (yep), nursing---not for some imagined athletic glory.

You are, of course, speaking historically. Aren't you? A significant numer of faculty members in english and nursing have headed for the hills during the past three years. You may wish to revised your post by deleting those two disciplines from your list.
Eagle Talk is now in full meltdown mode. Fire Bower.
Fire him? Don't they realize that firing as a means of problem solving doesn't work? The misguided attempt to fire Glamser and Stringer created problems for the university rather than solving them. We will live with those problems until the frost is on our gravesites. And why would the university fire a coach whose team lost to an ACC team? Comparing a strong conference like the ACC with what is left in the ACC is like comparing grapefruits and elephants. I have noted that athletic teams achieve national success when the vacate C-USA. That was also true with teams that left the old Metro Conference.
