Recent articles have indicated that the hurricane and trip to Memphis (football) have spun the athletics department's budget out of control. Remember back to the turn of the centry, the the financial situation got bleak because the dept managers had budgeted a Liberty Bowl trip at the beginning of the year that later failed to materialize (how stupid!).
The Eagles are 2-2 now, and need to finish 6-5 to go bowling at all. That means they need 4 wins in the last 7. They have only 3 home games left, so assuming they win them all, they need a road win. The home games are Central Florida, Memphis and Tulane. Tulane should not be hard, but winning both of the others will be no simple task.
The road games are N.C. State, Marshall, UAB and Houston. The Houston game looks winnable, but no terribly easy feat (given the explosiveness of their O). Any home loss from now on means 2 road victories must occur --- very difficult task (would likely have to be Houston and UAB).
In sum, the home loss to Tulsa last week put the team in a somewhat sticky situation from now on. Remember that even a 6-5 finish doesn't guarantee (remember 2001?) a bowl. If things don't go real smoothly from here on, the finances at Ferlise et al. could be shocked again before Christmas.
USM, under the direction of SFT, has discovered that FEMA will reimburse the university for any loss of revenue or additional expenses brought on by Katrina. So, those of you that would like to see SFT in more trouble, rest assured he will be rescued by TL and TC. It's not really pork, even though it is a pigskin. Thank God that we have friends in high places.
If I am right the McNeese State win does not count for bowl standings. Does this mean that we need one more win than you thought?
In the past, you could count only one win against a 1AA every few years. Now you can have one every year. So, luckily for USM the McNeese win will count, and may even make all the difference.
following Saturday's win, the next four games are on the road against UAB (3-3 overall, 1-2 CUSA), NC State (2-3 overall), Marshall (3-3 overall, 2-1 CUSA) and Houston (3-3, 2-2 CUSA). Memphis is flat out shaky this year, but they are certainly beatable. Their fans have already moved on to talk about basketball instead of football. The current standings are as follows:
Eastern division
USM (2-1 CUSA, 3-2 overall)
East Carolina (2-1 CUSA, 3-3 overall)
Marshall (2-1 CUSA, 3-3 overall)
Central Florida (2-1 CUSA, 3-3 overall)
Memphis (2-2 CUSA, 3-3 overall)
UAB (1-2 CUSA, 3-3 overall)
Western division
Tulsa (3-1 CUSA, 4-3 overall)
UTEP (2-1 CUSA, 4-1 overall)
Houston (2-2 CUSA, 3-3 overall)
Tulane (1-2 CUSA, 2-3 overall)
SMU (1-3 CUSA, 2-5 overall)
Rice (0-3 CUSA, 0-5 overall)
Aside from NC State's victory over Ga Tech, the wolfpack has done nothing spectacular this year and are certainly vulnerable. USM just has to win it's division and make it to the conference championship game in December where they will probably face either Tulsa or UTEP.

Keep in mind that USM was throttled at home by Tulsa just last week. Also, you have set some these opponents up as "shaky" and having "done nothing spectacular." When USM loses games to any of them, remember you said that.
C-USA is looking anything but great this year. Only UTEP has a chance of being bowl eligible before the month of October ends, and UTEP is the only team with less than 2 losses at this point in the season. Among the eastern division teams remaining on the schedule, Memphis (the "shaky" team) arguably has the best resume:
Lets face it. We have been a mediocre team in a mid major conference for a long time. Now the conference is even worse and so are we it seems. Solution -- BUILD A BIGGER STADIUM!!!!!

I posted this a while back, but anybody who thinks that M.M. Roberts really needs expansion ought to visited the legendary Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford. Except for the skyboxen, all USM really needs to do to have "SEC class" seating is to put a big bleacher in one endzone, because the east endzone bleachers at V-H are the only real difference (they don't have an upper deck). Moreover, the USM restrooms are lightyears better than the foul things at V-H. And the only chairbacks in that stadium are the ones in front of the skyboxen.
The really big difference is that Ole Myth can sell beaucoups tickets even when everyone knows they have a crappy team.

Are you saying the field in V-H runs east-to-west? That sucks.
Friday's game is about as close to a must-win situation for UAB as you can have at this point in the season. They are coming off 2 really close losses. It's going to be a dogfight.
