Some interesting things there, such as that Sir Pood created the Center for Writers and has made the military history component of the history department "3rd best in the nation" (yeah, whatever).
And, his new off-USM website: http://usmartsandletters.org/artman/publish/cat_index_1.shtml has iTech in a fury since it posts official USM information on a non-USM server. And Pood is paying for this website when he could have created it for free on a USM server.
He opened with a joke about the hurricane? What a guy.
He also admits that he makes mistakes, but doesn't mention what they are...I wonder if cowering under his desk during the G&S debacle counts as one.
Also, he mentions the MFA program in English at USM? And that the program has surpassed Johns Hopkins in the ratings? When did all this happen?
He also makes a joke about being an "explosives engineer"...says that if he can't manage conflicts on one end, well...
And the weirdest statement of all (I copied this word-for-word because I couldn't believe it): "USM is the only doctoral, research extensive, Carnegie-classified university in the state of MS." He says this to demonstrate how USM has distinguished itself from Ole Miss and MS State. WTF??? What does this gibberish even mean?
"Also, he mentions the MFA program in English at USM? And that the program has surpassed Johns Hopkins in the ratings? When did all this happen?" Johnny Fairplay
Anyone think we should ask David Berry (now retired), Mary Robison (left for another university, Kim Herzinger (now retired), Angela Ball, the Bathelme brothers--all who have taught in the program--that IF this is true, what part did Pood play in it? Oh, yeah.

While I shudder to think who SFT might put in his place, I hope Ball State gets the guy--gets him out of USM. He shares equal responsibility with Shelboo for the losses in the English department. And no matter how many times he claims that the now understands that he made mistakes, that claim is difficult to believe. He came into the job as an experienced administrator who certainly had knowledge of sound academic procedure and who made the choice to ignore it.
By the way, according to very reliable sources, the charge that he hid under his desk during the G/S debacle is not far from the truth.
Pood takes complete responsibility for joining the downtown community to the outer community through Rails to Trails and "discovering" the old HHS's potential as a museum. It was all his idea! WTF?? If you stomach through over half of his Ball State presentation - it takes some interesting turns.

Jay Dean had been trying for years to get the university to somehow utilize the old high school.
Hey, I'll trade you one Fos-o-max for the Poodster any day. Fos, when you can find him, can look you straight in the eye and tell a lie that would make a fisherman blush.
Let's hope the new broom sweeps clean when the Shelby timer hits zero....
EP is not a truthful person. His word is pretty much worthless. If this is what floats to the top in university administration, our universities are, indeed, deeply in trouble.
Did Pood really open a meeting with a joke about Hurricane Katrina? Really? Please tell me that is not true. I am a USM employee. I lost my home and all of my belongings in Katrina. Believe me, there was nothing funny about Katrina. If he really opened a meeting with a joke about our horrible loss, God help him. He needs help! He needs ihelpeven more than us Katrina victims do!

His joke was something along the lines of that he was glad to be at Ball State because he heard that there were no hurricanes up there. It was his opening line, and people did laugh. I thought it quite insenstive myself.
I'd like to point out that the department of Anthropology and Sociology NEVER asked for a PhD program in forensic anthropology. Dr. Marie Danforth does forensic anthropology and has several students working on theses that are forensic.
I'd also like to point out that the individual who has been calling for a PhD program in anthropology is Elliott Pood.
As many of you might realize, one does not earn a PhD in forensic anthropology. One earns a PhD in anthropology, at least in the United States.
And finally, South Alabama does NOT offer a PhD in forensic anthropology. They don't have a graduate program in anthropology.
I thought the Poodster did well in his interview at Ball State. But then again, I thought he did a good interview at USM too. (The greater fool, I.) He's quite a skilled speaker--as long as the subject is himself. I hope he leaves USM, but I pity anyone who gets him as an administrator. Pood is an incompetent and a liar.
How stupid does he think the people at Ball State are? I suspect that at least of few of them have heard of Ole Miss and know its research status. Not only does Pood lie, but he's stupid enough to think he won't be caught at it.

About as insensitive as his "Chinese Menu" comment.
I tried to watch it but was disgusted.
They certainly had to pan the camera back to fit all of him in the viewfinder!

Pood must get his ideas from TV - the same place Shelby gots the bright idea about moving criminal justice into Sci Tech.
USM tries to compete with other universtites that have major / established / respected programs in certain subject areas. No way USM could ever ompete with the program started by Bill Bass in TN (no slight intended toward Dr. Danforth).
People outside of the University and who are familiar with such matters just roll their eyes and chuckle. The shame is that it makes us look jsut as silly as the stuff on tv.

Apparently they are stupid enough to make him one of their top 3 candidates and invite him for a visit. How stupid were we?
Pood was not my choice. I wasn't on the search committee, but I've always suspected he was Shelby's choice. Though I have no idea if they would have been preferable, the other two candidates actually had some intellect, and the second one had sense of humor that didn't revolve around himself.
Getting all new Deans was not a good idea, but it wasn't the faculty's idea.
Faculty: two candidates unacceptable Group of professors say Elliott Pood reasonable choice
Emily Ortman | News Editor September 29, 2005
Ball State University’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors stated Wednesday that Elliott Pood, dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Southern Mississippi University, was the only acceptable candidate for provost.
William Swart, professor of decision sciences at East Carolina University, and Andrew Bodman, provost at Western Washington University, were determined to be unacceptable candidates....
...Overall, the AAUP members said they were disappointed with the pool of candidates for provost....
Lordy, Lordy. Don't those folks at Ball State read the Chronicle? Of course, Pood's retreat to under his desk was not reported there. Wonder what he foisted off on them in private meetings--a hero's role for himself? Anyway--we should all rejoice. Either no one told them the truth (doing unto ourselves) or someone told them the truth (doing unto others) but they didn't believe the source.

It strikes me as pretty ironic that the Ball State AAUP would find Pood "acceptable" given that the USM AAUP opened an A Committee investigation into what was pretty clearly a blatant abrogation of academic freedom in the "Gulf Coast Incident" involving Diane Stevenson case last October. For those of you who've forgotten this, Pood not only approved the Kenbot's interrogating Stevenson's students during class meeting time--without her permission or knowledge--but he also lied about the affair, egregiously and repeatedly, and in public forums. In effect, Pood slandered Dr. Stevenson, accusing her of various types of misconduct without ever giving her the chance to present her side of the story. His conduct of the matter was, to my mind anyhow, utterly reprehensible. The SOB should have been blacklisted, in my opinion.
Wouldn't it be unethical to NOT warn the Ball State AAUP about all this? I mean, I'd like to consign Pood to SOMEWHERE ELSE as much as anyone else. But, shouldn't we at least warn the Ball State AAUP about the Committee A investigation? Is it still ongoing? Was the Ball State AAUP apprised of it?
While Malone was out of line to question the instructor's students as he did, he did not and does not need her permission to do that. The students do not belong to her, nor does the room they were in. Administration has the right to investigate allegations of improper conduct in class by faculty. Malone's error was in the manner he chose to pursue that investigation, not in undertaking the investigation itself.
There are limits to free speech and to the so-called "academic speech" that is highly touted here. I await the day when professors will return to teaching their subjects and will cease using their courses as pulpits for preaching political views and railing against those they dislike personally.
I heard a story today about an Iraqi who won a scholarship to a U.S. university here in the continental U.S. He withdrew after 1 semester because his professors were preaching anti-U.S. thought and were attempting to make him ashamed to be liberated from Saddam Hussein's regime. He said he'd rather give up the opportunity than to be brainwashed into hating the U.S. I say good for him. It's too bad students don't demand the removal of professors who continually digress from their subjects to bash a particular political view, religious view, or other way of thinking.

Obviously this shows a disconnect from Mainstream Academics in what Southern's faculty thinks is important.
