We all mourn the passing of Dr. Gonzales who I knew as a student.  To take nothing from the solemnity of the occasion, but here is a bit of Shelby-speak.

Here is the quote I intended to include.  From the news release today or yesterday.

Thames said that Gonzales will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of his former students, friends and colleagues. “I am saddened to learn that Southern Miss has lost one of its most staunch supporters and beloved professors,”

well, donald, you have to admit that "most staunch" is "very unique."

Good grief - please give everyone a break. So many people loved and enjoyed this educator and wonderful man - myself included. Can't we just stay positive this one single time and focus upon what a great guy and educator he was and not stain him with such petty stuff?

I enjoyed his classes as a freshman hugely, and had additional contacts with him later. What a class act he was! Please leave Thames out of this - he had no part in most people's memories of Gonzales.

he (Thames) had no part in most people's memories of Gonzales.

Exactly.  I think the "staunch supporter of USM" statement was overly generalized by Thames. Gonzales was no fan of Shelby. He did love USM -- as most of us do.
