I just heard on PRM-I swear I'm not making this up-that the federal government will issue debit cards of $2000 to ALL victims of Hurricaine Katrina. Suggest USM faculty members get in line to apply
I got this from Yahoo.com a few moments ago. This is paraphrased.
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer The federal government plans to begin issuing debit cards worth $2,000 each to adult victims of Hurricane Katrina, according to the The Associated Press. This program will begin with those people who have been moved to large disaster relief centers, like the Astrodome.
As I posted in another thread, I would recommend going to the FEMA website (http://www.fema.gov/) for details on the above progrem. As I understand it, these cards are only for persons who were "displaced" by the hurricane. They are supposedly starting the distribution of these cards at the evacuation centers in an effort to encourage people living there to perhaps leave and start the process of putting their lives back together.
I understood it was UP TO $2000 (for a family of 6) and that single individuals get $360. This from someone with one of the relief agencies in Hattiesburg. They are giving them to shelter clients first. After those are taken care of you would have to go to a shelter to get one. I'm not advocating that people go get them just because they can. That's up to your individual conscience.

David,
The news reports that I have heard and read are saying that a $2000.00 debit card is to be provided to each "family group" that was "displaced" by the hurricane. Here is one link to the story:
Of course, I am sure that there will be numerous attempts to scam this program, with people driving from evac center to evac center, either actually displaced by the storm or just claiming to be, picking up cards along the way as they make their path to wherever it is that they want to relocate to.
Yes, I've heard it both ways, GW, but I was just posting what one of the relief agencies had told me today.
No doubt you are right that some people will scam where they can on this. I wonder what safeguards the government has in place...probably the same ones...oh forget it, I don't want to stir that pot up again.

David,
It appears that we were BOTH correct as far as debit cards go.
According to the info that I have been able to obtain, the Salvation Army is offering debit cards to storm evacuees, starting in the amount of $360.00 for an adult and going up to $1600.00 for a family group.
This is a seperate program from the FEMA card giveaway, the details of which are listed above.
Thus, a family group will recieve a total of $3600.00 in debit card money just as soon as the cards can be printed and passed out.
Unfortunately, there will be a 14-day wait for the monies to be credited to each card's "account". Gotta love that good 'ole Federal Bureaucracy.
I applied online Thursday night and last night (Friday) I found out that my family was approved for $2000 for disaster assistance in the form of lodging/hotel expenses because we had to leave our dwelling because of lack of utilities (still have none) and we are opting to stay with relatives instead of purchasing a generator. We decided to have the money direct deposited instead of receiving a debit card. We have been told by a FEMA rep. on the phone (15 minutes on hold) that the funds will be in our account anywhere from 24 hours to 4 days time.

Thanks for noting that the website wasn't working properly. I tried to register today & got kicked out once. The second time, I made it to the final step & got a "page not found" error.
I found it typical that the FEMA site requires the use of Micro$oft Internet Exploder. That is usually a symptom of a poorly or hastily built website.
1-800-621-FEMA is the phone number. You will probably be on hold for over 10 minutes or more. The website is very busy at the moment and it is a hit and miss thing. It took me several tries before I finally got my application through.
Nobody seems to realize that it is against the law for the FedGov to give money to the victims. The constitution, which is supposedly the supreme law, says so. Now I'm not saying that victims shouldn't be helped; in fact I've already given hundreds of dollars myself. What I'm saying is that the FedGov has no right to do it. It should all be from voluntary donations, charities, churches, corporations, individuals, etc. Anybody who wants to argue this feel free to email me - bdodge76@yahoo.com.
I don't know about what Mr. Dodge was saying, as I am not familiar with those laws.
I have a friend whose daughter lives in New Orleans and since she couldn't evacuate, and even though she sustained damage to her house, she cannot get assistance from the Red Cross or the Feds. She was told that it is only for those who have been displaced, as in evacuated and moved. That doesn't appear very fair, but then since when is life fair?

Bill Dodge, Minnesota
I've got my constitution out. Which amendment prohibits the federal government from providing assistance to disaster victims?

Amendment X
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."
-Being that the C. doesn't state that the FedGov can do it, it therefore falls to the sattes themselves.
