I have heard either directly or indirectly from many CoB faculty and staff members in Hattiesburg and I believe that most are doing as well as could be expected. Things are not great in Hattiesburg, but we are fortunate given the problems in other areas.
I am very concerned about some faculty and staff members on the coast. I would appreciate any information about these individuals. Please post what you know here. If there are CoB coastal faculty or staff members that receive this message from me please give me a call at home 601.264.9168. Phone service is sporadic, but please try this number. I cannot access my voicemail at the office.
I do not have any offical information from the university at this time. I cannot access the university website or email system, so you may know more than I. As soon as I know anything official I will try to post the information here.
I was in JGH today and did not see any significant damage to the building. I did not do a careful inspection, and did not open any faculty office. However, I did not notice any broken windows from the outside. Power was on in the building, but I encourage you to stay off the streets and away from campus until we receive the official word to return. Right now the physical plant crews are working hard to remove the damaged trees and begin cleaning up the wreckage.
I have just received more official information. First, the beginning of classes is September 12. However, faculty may be asked to return to campus late next week, possibly on Thursday, I ask that everyone try to get the word out to faculty. We need to try to determine which faculty and staff are available before we restart classes. Faculty and academic staff should not try to return to the campus at this time. Please wait until we receive more information next week. A large meeting of university officials has been scheduled for next Tuesday. Please understand that university officials are not witholding information. The problem is that there is not enough information available for good decisionmaking. Like everthing else, it is going to take some time to sort all the critical issues out.
As reported, paychecks and electronic payments were distributed.
The Gulf Park campus is a mess -- all buildings were damaged, and some are gone. Classes WILL NOT begin on September 12 on the coast. More information about the coast will be available next week. At the current time the university is trying to determine how to best take care of employees on the coast. As you might guess, there are more questions than answers. However, the univesity is trying to determine how to keep everbody on the payroll and actively engaged.
Finally, please understand that I am not an offical spokesperson for the university. I am trying to pass on information I receive, and I believe that many faculty and staff read this message board. I will do my best to keep the facts straight until better information channels are available.
I have not yet heard from the following members of the Coast CoB faculty and staff. If a faculty or staff member's name does not appear on the following list, I have explicit knowledge that they are okay. If anyone has information about those listed below please either post it here or call my home number - 601.264.9168. The people or families I have NOT heard from or about on the coast are:
Thanks to an incredible network of contact amongst Gulf Coast Cobers, we are now waiting to hear from or about: John Brown, B.T. Maddox, Mary Anderson, and Beth LaFleur
Special thanks to Ken, Linda, and Heather for gathering information and passing it on as well as to those who have contacted us directly.
Never been in Dean H.D.'s College or subsequent depts. With that stated, here's a well meaning thank you to a Dean who had the presence of mind to use this Board to connect with those in his College. He was the only one by the way.

Is it Michael Daniel or Daniel Michael? Daniel was at Auburn around the same time I was there. I hope he is fine.

It is Daniel Michael. Surprising that the dean didn't give the correct name.
I have just heard from Beth LaFleur, who is safe. We would still appreciate any word from or about Mary Anderson and Jon Brown. Thanks again to all who are getting word to us.
Good to hear that he is fine and it isn't really strange that the Dean didn't use the right name. He has two first names and people reversed his name all the time as a grad student. He's a good guy. I'm glad to know he is ok.
