Andy has been on his way this morning to bring supplies to Hattiesburg. He has reported the Demopolis AL is almost out of gas. So if you are headed this way, you will have to make it past Demopolis.

North Mississippi and Memphis are almost out, too.

I know we are far away, but Nashville doesn't seem to have a gas shortage...it's just expensive (I paid $2.77/gallon today, up from $2.55/gal on Monday). I suppose it's all relative...wish I could ship some gas down to Hattiesburg friends (along with food, water, ice, generators, etc.).

My closest family members own a national trucking company familiar to many of you, if you've ever noticed trucks going down the road (I-55,59, 10, 20, and all points in between). Here's the skinny on prices going up -- they will because many truckers are refusing to take loads where the gasoline prices are jacked up. Loads to FLA right now are going to the lowest bidder - beware of those HWY drivers. (Cali was history a few weeks ago). Be careful out there!

This, too, sickens me, but it's life.

There's still gas in Jackson. You've just got to wait.

And some power is back on in Hburg. Streetlights along 31st Ave.

Truth, you know who this is, dawg.

I got yer back, dawg. Glad to hear that there's some power in the 'burg. I hear there's power in Brookhaven already, so help's gotta be on the way, let's hope.

Just heard today that south of Nashville, there are places with no gas. And it's up to $3.29/gal today (I filled up at $2.77/gal yesterday). This is going to affect all of us, folks.

Truth,

Do you live in Nashville now?  If so, would you please give me a call at 230-3560?

We rode to Jackson via 589 to Seminary and then up. I needed roof tarps and building supplies. I was able to get gas in Jackson after a 90 minute wait. The price was not jacked up. I noticed on the way back down that some stations had cops and lines forming as far as Magee. I guess those stations will pump using a generator. Almost all electric was back on in Jackson. There was electricity in sections of Bellevue and about a mile or two down toward Purvis. Cell towers seem back on line in many places.

North Carolina has halted all government out of state travel unrelated to the disaster and all non-essential government fuel use (for instance, they've stopped mowing the grass!). The word "rationing" has been used but no action of that type seems imminent. Supplies seem quirky: Raleigh has long lines, some closed stations, of course high prices; some stations in High Point, just about 20 miles away, are charging $3.89 for regular and some are closed; but this morning at 8 am in Greensboro I bought gas (at $3.39 regular) at a Gate station with no lines, only a few other customers, and pumps still full.

NC gets its oil and gas from two Gulf pipeline--word is that supplies may be flowing by next week---the national picture seems uneven and (of course) completely unregulated.

Hope the Burg area soon has enough fuel--hang in there--
Anne

Truth, you aren't whistling Dixie here.  I live in New Mexico, we are over $3 a gallon for gas, they are talking shortages here. So far we haven't run out, but we don't have the demand that folks there do either.

We truly are in this together, I have room for people to stay, granted its not close to home, but it is dry and we have drinkable water.  Truth has my email address if anyone wants to contact me.

I just paid $2.829 for regular here, up from $2.499 a week ago. It isn't as bad as most places and there don't appear to be lines.

Just heard that Austin will be accepting 5,000 from New Orleans. Houston has 12,000 in the Astrodome and more in Reliant Center. San Antonio is taking 25,000 and Dallas is taking 25,000.

Starkville has gas though your luck at any given station varies from day to day. But, the lines are not horrible. Prices rose about 30 cents during the 48 hours we spent there this week (we drove to Hazlehurst this afternoon - BAD lines at all gas stations south of Starkville).

The situation is bound to change hugely this weekend with the home game. I hear the big sucking sound already.

There was gas in Meridian yesterday.  I stopped in York, AL and had no problems getting gas there except that I had to get medium-grade gas because the station was out of regular.  Once on my way in Alabama and beyond (to NC), I found that gas was widely available even if prices were increasing by the minute.  There are numerous reports of price gauging so be sure to report any suspected scams.

I had terrible trouble getting gas today. The lines in Hattiesburg are horrific, and there was nothing from Hattiesburg to LA. I was finally able to get gas in Vidalia, LA at $3.19/gal. From there on to Alexandria, LA (where I'm staying until the university reopens or I get electricity -- which ever comes first, I guess) there was no gas, and it appears to be running low in Alex., too.

HEST-

Check out your e-mail at USM for news on our department. I have not yet heard word from our GP people (Lin, Darlys, Manuel, Stretch, Bolte, and the newbies). People are also asking about Sheree and Tammy. I am going to Jackson airport to pick up my brother in law to help with me with the roof, and to get gas for the generator. Purvis was a scene from the walking dead yesterday, and my insurance guy smiled gamely at everyone who walked into his electrity-less shop and inquired about claims (his job is not one to have right now). I ran into the principal of Purvis elementary, and the board is having an emergency meeting (Monday evening I believe) to figure out what to do. Chances are a lot of Purvis kids will have to go to Oak Grove for a bit. I haven't seen the Baxterville school yet. That's my bit of news from southern Lamar county.

Mitch -- My bet is that Sheree is with her parents. Has anyone checked with Tammy's priest, Ken, down her area or with Jo Hailey? I know Tingstrom is fine (via the Dicksons) and have seen the dept. news as well.

Gas available in H-burg Sunday morning. Texaco at the corner of 40th and Hardy has $20 limit, the wait was about an hour. Price, ONLY $2.49! Don't know what other places are open.

I spoke with Tammy yesterday. She is fine and her house is intact. She was staying with Ken in Lumberton during the storm. She was in her usual rare form while waiting on line (the second) for gas in HBG.

Some other reports:

1. Electricty is on in the Purvis main drag, and some gas was pumped yesterday. This is about 1-2 weeks ahead of the reported time frame for getting electric back on. No electric in most of the surrounding areas yet.

2. The USM server (and webmail) appears to be down as of this moment.

Does anyone know if the Wesley Wellness center or Payne Center is open yet?

There were reports on WDAM that the university had opened the Payne Center for local rescue workers (fire, police) to come and shower.  It was the first outreach to the community that has been announced.  The IHL website press release, dated Friday afternoon, indicated that the USM website would be updated on Saturday - looks like it is a day behind.

Reports are that gas stations on 98 in Oak Grove have gas and relatively short lines.  Note that this is an improvement from early this morning when lines were still quite long.  I have a friend who just called to say she got gas at Krystal (across from Bankcorp South) on west side of 98 at the intersection of the road the high school is on (forgot the name) and that she was limited to $40, not $20, and only had to wait 10 minutes.  She said the line at Keith's across the highway was down also but didn't know what the limit was there.  Earlier this morning, I saw a gas tanker doing what I assume was filling at the station at Lake Serene grocery.  Good hunting, everyone.

Just got another two confirmations of the above and price verification at the Krystal station - $2.79/gallon.  Stop what you're doing and go get gas!  This is welcome news.
