Is the Hattiesburg campus officially closed for Tuesday yet? According to the Clarion-Ledger website Gulf Park is closed, but no mention of H-burg yet. Surely it will be closed?!?!?!

From what I hear, there is no power and no phone lines in H'burg. I can't imagine that there will be school at USM tomorrow...probably not for the rest of the week. Too dangerous with all of the trees and power lines down.

as of this time, the Clarion Ledger does not have the Hattiesburg campus listed as being closed tommorow. That's really stupid on Thames' part if he thinks school can be held when noone knows how much structural damage was sustained on the campus, there is no power in town and many students who left probably can't head back until tommorrow anyway.

This really seems like a no-brainer.

There isn't anyone who knows me that thinks I'm a supporter of Thames, but if you've been trying to get word in or out of Hattiesburg, it is nearly impossible. Without power, the web site isn't going to work and the phone system is down, too. I've only found two cell phones among dozens of people I know there that I've been able to reach.

I would assume the campus is closed for as long as I can't even reach a campus operator. I notice that CNN and the Weather Channel covered the coast and covered Meridian, but they must have taken a helicopter between them because I haven't seen one thing about any town between the two. I am talking live coverage. Hattiesburg and Laurel were mentioned when the eye was passing through. WDAM hasn't updated their site since Sunday. Hattiesburg American is being spottily updated from somewhere outside the area.

I had a call just a few minutes ago from a friend of mine who is a student. She evacuated to Mobile. I advised her to stay put. If the reports about trees/roads, etc is true, she can't get back anyway.

So, I agree, it's a no-brainer. Even if Shelby were silly enough to try to reopen the campus today, nobody is going to show up and I can't imagine a prof who'd hold a student's absence as anything but excused. Hattiesburg doesn't even have treated water at this point.

Read this article.

I think it's safe to assume that USM will be closed for the rest of the week, at least (even the highways are impassable at this point).

They are reporting at least 80 dead in Gulfport, with the numbers expected to rise. Please say a prayer for all our friends on the Coast, and we'll look forward to hearing from all of them soon.
